| Dear Family and Friends,
This coming weekend I will be participating in the Tri-State Trek, a three-day nearly 300 mile bike ride from Boston to New York, in order to raise money and awareness for ALS research.
Every year 8,000 people are diagnosed with ALS--last year one of those people was my dear friend Nonie Irey. Commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neuromuscular disorder that attacks and destroys the body's motor neurons. As these are destroyed, the brain becomes unable to send messages to the muscles which then weaken and lose their ability to move. In time the muscles atrophy and the person becomes unable to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. Throughout the progression of ALS the brain is completely functional, and a person is fully aware of what is happening. There is no treatment and no cure for the disease, which typically proves fatal in two to five years. Since her diagnoses in November Nonie's deterioration has been very fast, she has gone from running her Deli in Stonington Boro (which I eat lunch at every day) to being wheelchair bound--in what feels like the blink of an eye.
There is no know cure or viable treatment for ALS. That is why research is SO important. No one should have to become a prisoner in their own body, or have to watch someone they care about suffer at the hands of such a devastating disease.
So, please join me as I ride for those who can't--I'm doing the tough part riding my bike from Boston to New York....I just need you to do the easy part: donate!!
Thanks for your support!!
Best,
