GOT SKIN? LEARN THESE FACTS:
* Melanoma is the most serious and lethal form of skin cancer. * The lifetime risk of developing melanoma is
1 in 39. * Melanoma is the only cancer for which incidence and mortality are rising unabated, yet only receives 2.5% of the funding provided to other cancer research. * 1.2 million new cases of skin cancer occurred in the U.S. in 2006-more than all other new cases of breast, lung, colon and prostate combined. * Melanoma is the most common cancer among young adults ages 20-30; * Melanoma is the primary source of cancer death for woman ages 25-30; and 2nd most common cause of death for women ages 30-35. * During the past 10 years, the number of cases of melanoma has increased more rapidly than that of any other cancer. * 10,000 people in the U.S. died in 2006 from skin cancer of which 8,000 were melanoma.. * One person dies every hour in the U.S. from melanoma. * The incidence rate in Maryland alone increased over 300% in the past two decades.
The “TRI-TO-WIN…the fight against melanoma” Kids Triathlon fundraising directly benefits the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. Everyone involved joins the community of patients, families, doctors, educators and concerned individuals to:
• support medical research that will ultimately lead to a cure for melanoma;
• seek opportunities to educate the general public on prevention and the seriousness of melanoma; and,
• provide resources for patients and the entire melanoma community.
The 2009 "TRI-TO-WIN" Kids Triathlon will create a lasting impression on those who share and learn from the experience. True, the satisfaction of testing one’s youthful endurance to simply “finish” this event or to be a competitive spirit hoping to stand in the winner’s circle, is an important part of this charity event. But, success will really be measured, in the countless “sun-safe” learning opportunities that take seed, the healthy lifestyles that are embraced and the lives that are saved.
Our youth triathletes and donor partners in this “TRI-TO-WIN…the fight against melanoma” Kids Triathlon are the real heroes of the day. The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation greatly appreciates their involvement and contributions to our mission.
When we “TRI-TO-WIN” together, we will win! |
