Wow, can you believe it! It has already been over a year since we made our “ONE and DONE” massive bike ride fundraising campaign with the Race Across America (RAAM). Looking back, it definitely feels like 2007 was a much different world then what we are dealing with today. Everyone was still fairly giddy with their personal economic position and outlook for the future.

Our RAAM 2007 Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) fundraising event was not only an amazing life experience; but with all of your help and financial support, we accomplished something much bigger than any of us would have ever imagined. Because of so many great people, such as you, we raised nearly $600,000. Dollars for tumor research for people who are afflicted with Neurofibromatosis (N/F). Big word for a scary genetic disorder.

Your support last year has, quite literally, changed the course of NF research. No one expected us to do that well. . .and so the Foundation has used that money to leverage new drug discovery initiatives, a new national clinical care network, new pre-clinical trials, a national database to track various NF manifestations for future trials, along with many other new and exciting projects previously undreamed of without our help and the help of some other significant and unexpected gifts last year.

Well, our personal worlds may have altered in the past year; but the need to continue the fight to find a cure for N/F has not. This time though we have adjusted our lofty goals and ambitions to reflect more in keeping with the mindset of today’s economic landscape.

Kelly Mahoney has set her mind to finish 66 miles in the Tour de Tucson. Although, she has done several marathons, THIS IS A BIG DEAL for a woman whose idea of a “big” bike ride is to pedal to A.J.’s for a coke and a cookie with the kids. She has inspired our two boys, Casey and Bennett to join us. How about you? We have formed our own CTF Team for this year’s Tour de Tucson, which entitles “our” riders to have a portion of their entry fee covered and allow all of the money we fundraise to be directed to the Children’s Tumor Foundation. We would love it if everyone would ride with us on behalf of CTF. No question our time is short to prepare, but that’s half the adventure. For those who want to be with us in spirit; we would love it if you could sponsor Kelly with a $1.00/mile ($66.00) donation. We will “get the party started” with an opening pledge of $250./mile. It would be fantastic if the total dollars grew to that number or more. We would then have to dig a little deeper to keep up.
