"Getting Strong Now"

Dear Friends & Family,

This October I will be riding in the Hershey’s Tour de Pink – a 220 mile bike ride from Hershey, PA to NYC - to benefit the Young Survival Coalition which is an organization that supports young breast cancer survivors like myself. I need your support.

I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in September of 2006. I was 32, felt healthy, and woke up one day with a lump. I was told the following week I had cancer. The next month I had a double mastectomy followed by chemotherapy, radiation, Herceptin (antibodies) and reconstruction. My cancer was aggressive but so was my treatment and I am now considered to have “No Evidence of Disease” (breast cancer lingo for “Remission”).

As many of you know cancer not only affects the body and mind but also takes a toll on those who care about you. Mentally I felt strong – partly because my situation seemed so surreal (and sometimes still does) that I didn’t know how to process it. Mostly I credit my support system – my fantastic medical team, my family, friends, co-workers – so many people sent well-wishes, added me to prayer lists, took me to appointments and spent time with me. It was a humbling experience to have so many people pulling for me and I felt very lucky and blessed– I still do.

I feel strong now and I’m ready to take on this ride to raise awareness for the YSC. The YSC was so helpful when I went through my experiences and let me know I was not alone (250,000 women under age 40 in the US are living with breast cancer). Through the YSC I could get information or lurk on message boards to learn about what women just like me were going through (Can I still have kids? Can I adopt? I want cool wigs! Reconstruction or natural? You get the idea). The ride is sponsored by the Hershey Company which I joined as an employee in 2008 – I feel very fortunate to work for a company that is focused on a cause that affects my life so intimately. Thank you for visiting my page and reading my story. Your donation truly does make a difference in the fight against breast cancer and in the lives of those dealing with this awful disease.
