Tamieka's Triathlon Madness II
Tri-ing to Save Lives
Welcome! I had so much fun the first time...
Thanks to all of you who supported me to my goal of raising money and completing my first triathlon in June of 2006 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training.
I met a muriad of great people and had so much fun, that this year, I am training to participate in the Memphis in May Olympic distance triathlon (1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, 6.2 mile run) on May 20th, 2007.
All of us with
Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this triathlon in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. More specifically, in honor of a young lady named Sarah Caroll. In the spring of 1990, Sarah was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). On June 28th of that year, with the fortunate discovery that her brother had the same bone marrow type, she received a bone marrow transplant, followed by a year of recovery and home-schooling to protect her weakened immune system from germs. In honor of her 15th “Bone Marrow Birthday” — the day of her transplant — Sarah decided to train for a marathon as a member of the Western North Carolina Chapter of Team in Training. Sarah ran 26.2 miles at The P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon in Phoenix, Arizona along with over 1,700 TNT participants in a tribute to her survival, to her family, and to all the other survivors, patients and families she has met along her journey.
It's people like this who are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Please make a donation to support my goal of raising $4700 or more to support Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.
I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
2/25- UPDATE- Some of you may remember that I did my triathlon last year in honor of Rebecca Simpson...She was the daughter of a friend and was battling leukemia. I received news yesterday that on Feb 23rd, she lost her fight with cancer. In light of this, I have chosen to also complete my triathlon in her memory. You can read all about her, the bravery she displayed and her wonderfully supportive community at www.caringbridge.org/nc/rebecca.
