Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I am training to participate in the Tri Latta Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. This is an endurance event will be held on June 14, 2008. The specifics of this event include a 750 meter open water swim, a 17 mile bike ride, and a 5K run.

All of us in Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission. I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress.

If you prefer to donate offline, please make the check payable to LLS and send it to:

My training begins...

  • Feb 8: Today was our first team swim practice. We learned 6 new drills. The coach said my form is good, but I need to lengthen my stroke. It felt good to get back in the water.

  • Feb 10: Today was supposed to be cycling, but it's been too windy. I decided to swim instead. After doing an hour of arms at the gym, I did drills in the pool for 850 yards.

  • Feb 11: Ok, today I tackled the bike. I've been told that everyone who competes in triathlons has a strong sport and a weak sport. Well, cycling would definately be my weak sport. Still, I got out there and did it. I am getting more comfortable on the bike, but I still have a long way to go. I'll be glad when it warms up a little, so I can get out more to practice.

  • Feb 12: Today was a two part workout. I went to the gym this morning and worked my back for a little over an hour. Later, after supper, I went to the Y to swim. Did the stroke/drill focus workout #1 as assigned by my coach. I believe that totalled 1000 yards. I feel like my stroke is improving. I've been working on breathing on both sides, That's been a challenge. I usually breath to the left, but I feel less of a strain in my shoulder when I switch off.

  • Feb 13: Went to Gold's today. Did chest, but I think I pushed too hard. May take a break from chest for a few extra days. My neck is stiff, from swimming I think. Tomorrow I'm doing spin with Padma.

  • Feb 14: Woke up to lots of snow, so I slept in. I did go to the gym later though and work my legs. No cardio today.

  • Feb 15: I had a minor outpatient procedure today, and I've been ordered not to exercise until the 17th. Still, I went to the team swim practice and watched. I listened to what the coach was telling the rest of the team. I'm going to bike and swim on Sunday.

  • Feb 17: I had an excellent training day today. Took the bike out with my mentor, Susan. She was so helpful. We spent about an hour on the bike, with a considerable amount of instruction included in the session. About half an hour was actually spent riding. I felt VERY positive when we were done. After having lunch with Susan, I spent 30-40 minutes training in the pool. My new goggles made a world of difference. I did the assigned drill sequence and concentrated on bilateral breathing and exhaling completely under water. That takes a little getting used to.

  • Feb 19: I went to the pool today. I did 1800 yards worth of drills/freestyle swimming. My bilateral breathing is getting a lot more natural. My new goggles are great, but they leave my eyes looking seriously bruised. They don't leak though, and that is what matters.

  • Feb 20: Today I took the bike out. It was very cold and windy, but according to the weather forecast, this is going to be the best day all week, so I didn't want to pass up the opportunity to get on the bike. It was a decent practice given the wind.

  • Feb 21: I went to the gym and then the Y to swim tonight. I worked my chest first at Gold's, but I was a little rushed, and I didn't want to push myself so hard that swimming was difficult. Still, I got a pretty good chest workout in. Swimming went well, although I find it very difficult to swim in one lane with 4 other people. I'm still being told to lengthen my stroke. Apparently, I try to muscle my way through the stroke without reaching and therefore don't get enough rotation in my body as I move through the water. This is, I have been told, a bad thing. Or at least, it is not ideal. So I have got to work on reaching. That's really going to be my focus this week.

  • Feb 22: Today was group swim practice. I managed to swing by the gym and do an abbreviated chest workout before swimming. I didn't do as much as I usually would, but at least it was something. I'm going to try to hit each major muscle group at least once a week. That may be all I can do while I train for this event. Swim practice was pretty good. I can't say I do very well swimming in one lane with 6 people, but I do feel like I'm improving. I was told, yet again, that I need to lengthen my stroke. I'm going to start hearing that in my sleep. I am, however, determined to prevail over the stroke.

  • Feb 23: This morning was our first group run. We met at Country Park at 8am. I did better than I thought I would. I kept up pretty good until around the second mile, then I started to fall behind a bit. Still, I did better than I thought I would. Most of the others had more experience running than I do. We did about 3 miles. I'm going to begin by working on the run/walk. The coach suggested that I start by running 4 minutes / walking 1. This week I'll start working this into my routine.

  • Feb 23: Today was a crazy workout day. First, I went to the gym and worked my legs. I was surprised that they were sore from the run. I'm not sure why I was surprised, but I was nevertheless. After the gym I went to the Lake Brandt greenway and biked a little. I didn't stay long though because it was absolutely freezing. I had adjustments made to my bike last week during the bike fit clinic and they made a huge difference. I'm very pleased with that. After biking - briefly - I went to the Y to swim. I forgot to take my workout, so I did a combination of drills and freestyle for a total of about 1700 yards. I seriously need a lap counter. It is very hard to keep up with the lap count when you're swimming. When I come into my fortune, that is on my list. The very good news is that I feel like I made huge progress on my stroke. I could really feel a difference today in my swimming. I think the key was that I really threw my shoulders into the stroke. That gave me the stroke length and the rotation that I was missing before. I felt much stronger. I'm curious to see what the coach says on Friday.

  • Feb 26: Today I swam 2,000 yards. After a warm-up, I did 500 yards worth of drills, followed by three distance intervals. I forgot my workout, yet again, so I did 300 yards, break, 500 yards, break, 600 yards. I tried to focus on my form as I swam. I do think it's getting better, but after a point my goal is simply to stay afloat and keep moving!

  • Feb 26: Today I did my first solo run/walk routine in Country Park. There was an arctic wind blowing, so it was much more unpleasant than it could have been. Still, I did it. I kept to my run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute routine for 3 miles. That is two laps around Country Park. My second lap was the exact same time as my first, so I did manage to at least keep my pace up, such as it was.

  • March 1: This morning we had a team run. It was a gorgeous morning, thank goodness. We did 4 miles at the 4 min. run / 1 min. walk pace. I managed to keep up, and I didn't walk at all during any of the run segments. I was wiped out when we were done though. Still, I feel like that was a great accomplishment.

  • March 2: Today was a great training day. First, I took the bike to Country Park. When I was done cycling, I dropped by Gold's Gym and did an abbreviated leg workout, since the Y doesn't open till noon. When I was done, I went to the Y and swam 2,000 yards without stopping. 40 laps. It took me just under an hour. I wanted to see how far I could swim without stopping, so I didn't do any drills, just freestyle. It felt good. It has been a beautiful weekend. I hope next weekend is this nice.

  • March 3: Today was turned out to be a surprise. I didn't think I'd have time to workout at all, but I ended up going to Gold's tonight. I managed to get a great back and shoulder workout. I strained my lower back Sunday when I did my rushed leg workout. I need to stop rushing and pay more attention to what I'm doing.
