Racing to Save Lives
I am training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's “Team In Training”. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to support research and on leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma and to support the patients and families facing these diseases. Fully 75% of donations to my effort go directly to funding medical research, patient and community support, and to public health and professional education. Nationwide, Team in Training funds over 400 medical researchers working on these diseases; 27 of them work at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center here where I live in Seattle.
On June 17 I'll be doing my second triathlon with Team in Training: the New Balance Half Ironman (1.2 mi. swim, 56 mi. bike and 12.1 mi. run) in Victoria, BC, Canada, in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. I'm especially doing it for my Mom, who died of lymphoma seven years ago. While Mom lost the battle with lymphoma, thanks to advances in cancer medications she was able to live a very full life during her treatment. For me, the work of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society is not just about saving lives but also about letting all leukemia and lymphoma patients truly live, even in the presence of these very difficult diseases.
This May, one month before the race, I will be marrying my love, Dave Masuda, who is also doing the Victoria race with Team in Training. We will be getting married on a beautiful ranch among rolling hills, ponderosa pines, and (if we’re lucky and have timed it right!) an astonishing display of wildflowers. I know Mom would have loved this place and we wish she could be here to share this time and place with us. In her memory, we are asking that, in lieu of wedding gifts, our friends and family make a donation to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society in her memory.
