SpunkyGidget: Racing to Save Lives

I am training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. We are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I will be competing in my first half-marathon representing The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training at San Diego's Rock n' Roll Marathon on June 1st.

My fund raising goal for this event is $4,000. If you can donate, that’s awesome. Every dollar helps! Be sure to check and see if your company does matching for employee gifts to charity… where every dollar can become two! (If your company does matching, please forward your email confirmation for entry in the system.) Also feel free to tell your friends and family about my personal goal to run this (half) marathon, and the charity fund raising that I'm supporting in doing so.

Showing off my practice jerseyI have to be honest, when I joined Team in Training a little more than a month ago I was really interested in the social and physical fitness aspects of the program. Meeting new people, learning to run, actually getting some exercise. The fact that my running was tied to a charity was just a perk.

Over the past month however, things have changed. With my hectic life, I've missed most of the team events, I often practice on my own in whatever city I'm currently in... but running with the team on Saturday's has been an amazing and life changing experience. You see, each Saturday the team meets together and we hear stories from team members who suffer from the blood cancers we're running against.

Money raised in the past few years is saving the lives of people today!

One team member was diagnosed with a blood cancer about 10 years ago. When she was diagnosed she didn't think about dying, she thought about her kids growing up without a mother. She was diagnosed when she was my age.

For several years she took pretty much the only medication that there is. She said it made her feel perpetually on the verge of getting the flu. Having just suffered a week long flu, I can relate to that misery.

She joined Team in Training.

Three years later she heard about an experimental drug a doctor was researching in Portland, OR. People talked about it as being "one pill a day and it goes away". Leery, she tried it.

She is now in remission and has been living a full life "flu free" for the past seven years. The majority of the funding for the research came from the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society via Team in Training.

It's not about raising money to hopefully save someone's life in the future. No, the money raised over the past few years is making an impact and saving the lives of people today.

Her story is just one of many similar one's on my team. If her story touched your heart as it did mine, please, make a donation!
