This will be my second commitment in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in the fight against blood cancer by joining their “Team In Training” (TNT). I raised $4500 this past summer in support of TNT and cycled 100 miles in the Tahoe Century in June.

I had such a great experience with LLS. It was amazing to be surrounded by 2000 cyclist with TNT. It tops as one of the best experience in my lifetime. LLS has been a very positive in my live. TNT raised $8.5 million in the Lake Tahoe Century. I've decided to recommit with LLS by raising another $4500 and to cycle in another century, 100 miles, in the El Tour de Tucson on 17 November 2007.

LLS's mission is to raise funds to help the 100,000+ American men, women, and children who are struck by Leukemia—the leading killer of children in the United States.

I made this commitment for several reasons: (1) I am grateful for my good health and want to express that gratitude by helping others (2) I want to challenge myself by meeting difficult goals (3) I want to help sponsor cancer treatment and research. The research that the Society has sponsored has been the catalyst for revolutionary treatments for Hodgkin’s disease, Lymphoma, and other cancers; including breast and lung cancer. Thanks to this type of fundraising, the research is working: In forty years the survival rate for children with Leukemia has gone from 4% to 85%—a phenomenal difference.

I am training in honor of Matthew Soto. Matthew was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia on 31 August 2005 when he was just five years old. Matthew is now seven, in remission, and his treatment is scheduled to last one more year. I've have the pleasure of knowing Matthew because I'm a Big Mentor for his older brother, Christopher, in the Big Brother Big Sister program. Matthew has such great spirit and has a great attitude for a young person fighting this deadly disease. His treatment would not have been possible without the research supported by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thinking of Matthew will help me get up at 6am on Saturday morning for my weekly 40, 50 and 60-mile bike rides.

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.

I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support! With your help and support, together we can help more children like Matthew survive cancer.

I just got a call from Matthew's Mom last night informing me that Matthew has been hospitalized. I'm going to visit him in the hospital when I get home. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

My mileage is up to 47 miles. I'm still recovering from the hardware removal out of my left knee last month. I hope to get faster before the month's done.

My mileage is up. I rode a total of 200+ miles last week. Training is going well and there is no doubt that I will complete my century. My only concern is my fundraising. I'm am down approximately $900 and I've only got two fundraisers left. 1) I am selling Spurs tix for the Nov 11 game. 2) I am hosting a LLS night at Betos on Nov 5. If you need more information on either of those events, feel free to email me at amomentis@sbcglobal.net.

The big day is just 7 days away– my 100 mile bike ride at the Tour de Tucson! It’s been a wonderful journey that has pushed me physically to new heights, including this past weekend’s 62-mile training ride and tomorrow's 42-mile ride, and given me the opportunity to impact the cancer community in a unique way. Here’s what I’ve learned this season: - Over 824,000 Americans are fighting blood cancers. - The Society gave over $64 million to blood cancer research, and with your help, we will give even more this year! - Life-saving therapies are being developed every day such as Gleevec, which brought the survival for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia up to 95%! - Over 400 families in the South Texas area received financial aid last year to help with costs not covered by insurance. - Our team will raise over $60,000 this season with your help! For all who have donated to the cause, THANK YOU! If you haven’t, there is still time. Donate this week, and know you are making a difference! The patients of South Texas, myself and our team thank you for your generosity!
