Nathan Etter's Team In Training Page
Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team in Training home page!
It's that time of year again! The winter solstice has passed, the days are getting longer... and triathlon season is upon us!
I'm back again this year, training for the Wildflower Half Ironman, which will take place on May 3rd, 2008. This is a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and half marathon (13.1 miles) all in one huge race. Touted as "the hardest Half Ironman course in the world," it proved to be a daunting challenge last year. This year, I'm making a new vow: I'm going to beat my finishing time from last year, and complete the race in under 6 hours, 30 minutes!
I attended the Team in Training kickoff on Saturday, and the stories I heard reminded me just how critical finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma really is. Here are some sobering statistics: Did you know that leukemia is the number one disease killer of children under 14 years of age, and strikes 10 times as many adults? Leukemia and lymphoma are also the leading fatal cancers in men under the age of 35. But research changes the outlook for patients. From 1960 to today, the five-year survival rates for acute lymphocytic leukemia (the most common form of childhood leukemia) have improved from an appalling 4% to 80%. Improvements continue to be made every year, with research funded in part by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
