Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I am excited to have recommitted with Team in Training.
This year will mark my second season with TNT. Last year I went to an info meeting and listened to all the presenters not realizing how BIG this was going to be in the long run. I signed up not knowing how much 13.1 miles really were. DH and I plugged it into a conversion site and I had to swallow, a bit. Looking back I underestimated the amount of miles I'd cover in my 6 day a week walks.
There were 6am wake-up calls and chilly car rides to the trails. Nap time after featured high on the list too.
Well, long story short, I not only went to San Diego and walked 13.1 miles in 3 hours and 32 minutes (plus some extra feet to get to the start and the bus back to the hotel) but I also raised around $4100 for research.

In San Diego I was greeted by Leukemia survivors and their families and I realized even further what impact the funds I raised were making in their lives. People walked up to us and shook our hands, sometimes you'd hear a "Go Team" shout followed by "Thank You".
As a survivor said, "Doing this training is not a reward for you, it's a reward for me because you are raising funds for a cure. The finish line is your reward"

My friends, I will be fundraising starting today.
Why, you might ask.
For me the *why* is why it touches my heart deeply, children who get these diseases.
Last year a member on an online forum I belong to lost her son at 13, he was my daughters age. I joinded TEAM and walked my marathon in his honor.
Adults get this disease in greater numbers but as a mom to two and a preschool teacher it saddens me to hear about children being sick or dying.
The leukemia death rate for children 0-14 years of age in the United States has declined 70 percent over the past three decades. Despite this decline, leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under age 20. About 515 children under the age of 14 are expected to die from leukemia in 2007.
With donations in the future the death rate could decline even more and no child will have to suffer through terrible treatments or lose it's life.

What is going to happen to my donation?
Research funded by the Society has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec®.

Thank you for any donation you’ll make and know it will make a difference in someone’s life.
Thank you for supporting me.
