Racing to Save Lives

To raise money for research and patient services for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I am training to complete a Ironman

ironcanArtFor a 3rd year I'm back raising money for for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

2006 - Wildflower Triathlon (Half-Ironman course) rasing over $5,000

2007 - Ironman Canada (Aug 26th) & Tahoe Century (June 3rd) rasing over $11,000

2008 – This I will go even further than before, with a new goal of $25,000

Why: I keep coming back to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as it has provided some of the best research for cancer, in the past three decades the survival rate for Leukemia has improved by 60%. However it is still the leading disease killer of people under 20 and this past year two of our team’s honorees past away. I want to dedicate the next year of events to both Erika and Mathew who lost their fight with Leukemia.

What: I have many events planned for year upcoming year but the main two events are Ironman USA Lake Placid (2.4 mile swim, 112mile cycle and a 26.2 run) and something I have never attempted before, The Furnace Creek 508 which is Ultra Marathon Cycling event. As the name suggests it is 508 miles, not only that it but non-stop also with a cut-off time of 48 hours! The route takes around Southern California through the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, what more could ask for? Maybe an average temperature of 95F, yes it has that too.

When:

October 6-7th 2007, I’ll have my first attempt at The Furnace Creek 508 (just 5 weeks after Ironman I’m only just recovered and nowhere near fully trained.

July 22nd 2008, Ironman USA Lake Placid

October 2008, The return to the Furnace Creek 508!

How:

This year I’ll be volunteering as a Training Captain on the Ironteam, when I’m not helping other’s train-up for Ironman, I will be on my own long training rides with a number of 200-300 rides needed to prepare for the 508. You can always find out about my last training at my blog.

Our Team Honorees

Louie Bonpua (a local hero), while battling CML (Chronic myelogenous leukemia), inspired many people by training with Team In Training to do Ironman Canada in 2001. He completed with just a few minutes left on the clock, doing an Ironman Triathlon is tremendous achievement for some in good health, to accomplish this while fighting cancer is nothing short a of miracle. Louie sadly died just over 4 months later. He is a great inspiration to all of us on the team.

Doug Booth
Doug Booth is an Honoree on our team, he has been fighting Lymphoma since December 2002, due the research done over the last few years he has been able live to see his new grandson who was born at the end of last year. You can read is whole story here. Doug often attends our practices to offer us words of encouragement and to cheer us on.

My Grandmother

My personal Honoree is my Grandmother, she has survived a couple of great battles in life, the first was when she served her country in World War 2, the second was a personal fight against Lymphoma. She has the strongest will (some say stubborn) of anyone I've ever known. With the pioneering research she became an early survivor of Lymphoma. That was over 30 years ago and without the research and people raising money back then, I may never have known my Grandmother.

Here are some facts: .

1) An estimated 785,829 Americans are living with a blood cancer.

2) Survival rates for children with leukemia have improved 61% over the past three decades.

3) Every 5 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, approximately 118,310 new cases are expected this year.

4) Leukemia is the leading disease killer of people under the age of 20.

5) Every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer – an estimated 53,920 deaths in 2006.

Please make a donation (100% Tax Deductible) to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission. The money that I’ll be raising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be donated to cancer research, patient services and education. The Society's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I want to do my part to help. If you know someone with cancer, please give me the honor of racing for them or their memory. Help me to fund research to find a cure so that no other families will have to suffer.

Yes, I really did swim in this freezing water

All of us at Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

I hope you are willing and able to support the cause, financially or simply with positive thoughts toward my endeavor!

Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress.
