Getting ready for the big day! Why I am I doing this?

Swimming my way up to the transition area during our recent practice triathlon!

Welcome!

Since early February, I have been hard at work training and fund raising towards my Olympic distance triathlon with Team in Training. On April 12th, I crossed my fund raising finish line! Thanks to everyone who supported me --there have been so many of you, and I am truly grateful.

Through race day, June 8, 2008, I'll be using this page to update you on my training/race preparation. I'll post my results after the race as well, so keep checking in!

Training update: This is week 18 of training --the final week! We fly off to Maui tomorrow. This week I have been trying to rest while also getting a lot of work and loose ends tied up before heading out. I'm concerned about a muscle pull in my left quadriceps which hurts a bit when I swim (so I'm not running), but I think it feels a little better today than yesterday, so I'm hoping for the best by Sunday. Race Day! This week I have really cut back on my yardage in the pool, but tried to get a little bit of pace and speed(ish) work in there to keep the muscles lively. No swims over 2000, and today was just 1600. I felt like I hadn't done much of anything in the pool this morning when I got to 1600, but I reminded myself of what our coach said: by the end of taper, I should be so bored with not moving that I am bursting at the seams to start the race. So, with that thought in mind, I got out of the pool, waved bye to my lanemates, and walked away. I haven't gone through a taper since February 1997 (not that I haven't had plenty of breaks from the pool), so it has become a foreign experience. Otherwise, I am trying to focus on visualizing the different stages of my race and the transitions.

A friend who made a donation to my fundraising effort this spring told me that her father had passed away from Myeloma, and so I add one more name to my list of honorees...names I will wear on my jersey once I get out of the water on race day (along with my own name, so people will know who to cheer for!). These names are: Denise, Gary, Jason, Shelley, V, Dylan, and John. Though, I should point out that Dylan is 5 years cancer-free and doing great.

My thoughts are still with Kathleen as well. It is not a blood cancer she has, but anyone who is reading my updates, please send her your positive and healing thoughts. Kathleen is a ray of light in my life, and has been fighting her cancer for three years now. We're with you, Kathleen!

Lake Berryessa 2006

Why am I doing all this fund raising? I am training for the Kings Trail Olympic distance triathlon in June, which I am doing as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. As part of my participation, I am also trying to raise funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, and particularly in honor of Denise, Gary, Jason, Shelley, V, and Dylan. We need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I'm hopeful that many people can help me reach my goal. If you are in a position where you can donate, you can do it right here on this website. Your money will be going directly to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and is of course tax-deductible. Any amount, be it $5 or $500 makes a difference.

Thank you for visiting my website. I hope you'll check back often to monitor how it's going, and watch that progress bar slide over to 100% (or more!)
