Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I am training to participate in the Honolulu Century Ride. This is a 100 mile endurance event on September 30. All of us in Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. In the last nine months, I came close to losing my own life as a result of Leukemia. My second stem cell transplant was not a pleasant experience, and I sincerely wish no-one would ever have to experience it again. While this is a forlorn hope, I am raising funds to help support research to find better cures and eliminate these cancers. My dream is to live in a world where my grandchildren need not fear getting blood cancers. I need your support to cross this ultimate finish line!
Please make a donation to support my dream and help advance the Society's mission.

I was very sick all week, so the doctor told me I can't ride this weekend. Hopefully we will be able to ride during the week.
August 23, 2007
We couldn't ride Tuesday, so we went riding Thursday morning on Fiesta. I felt pretty strong, but had been pretty sick, and got kind of sick on the ride. We cut it real short and called it a day.
August 19, 2007
We had a great noodle ride today. We rode the Coronado Strand. My average heart rate was only 67% and our average speed was 12.4mph. A few weeks ago this was my best average for an all out effort! We did about 20 miles.
August 18, 2007
Menchie and I had an appointment in the morning, so we joined the team at the first sag stop. The temperature was over 100 degrees and I started West Lilac within the first 2 miles of starting my ride. Not much warmup. Nevertheless, I ended up at the top with a heart rate of 81%, another improvement over the previous week. We made the right turns this week, and we got to a hill on Old Castle road and I couldn' t go any more, I was so hot. Menchie gave me a ride to the top and I rode down the hill. On the way down, I had a bit of a problem. I noticed that in spite of the heat, I was not sweating. This is bad. I was really weak. So I quit the ride after only 14 miles and 1000 feet of climbing.
August 14, 2007
Intervals today on Fiesta Island. It is getting dark sooner, so our ride was a little shorter.
August 11, 2007
The team ride this week was really hot and hard. It was about 64 miles, but about 4000 feet of climbing. The elevation is to the right. You can see there are basically 3 big hills, including West Lilac and Champaign again. I made it to the top of all the hills. On West Lilac, my heart rate was only 83%, down 7% from last week, a huge improvement. We missed a turn and accidently took a shortcut that eliminated some climbing, but we did plenty anyway.
August 9, 2007
I had a really hard day today and had decided not to go to spin class when a friend called and suggested the 56 Bike path. Menchie and I went and we had a great time! Hammered lots of hills and generally had fun. I really needed that!
August 7, 2007
We bought a car this evening, so we got to Fiesta Island late. We rode as long as we could and got in about 7.5 miles.
August 4, 2007
Our team ride today was a repeat of last week. The big difference was that I made it up all the hills. It was great. At the top of West Lilac my heart rate was 90%, and I had to rest for a while. I rested on top of Champaign also. I was hoping for some extra miles today, but one of the other riders had knee problems so we had to take a shortcut. We ended up about 52 miles again, with about 2500 feet of climbing.
August 2, 2007
We went to spin class today. Took it easy to make sure we were strong on Saturday.
July 31, 2007
We had a really fun ride today. We were doing intervals on FIesta Island. I was doing 3 minute intervals at about 85% heart rate. It was really windy. I was hoping to hit an average speed of 13mph, but only got to 12.9.
July 29, 2007
We did a short noodle ride on Fiesta Island today. It was about 10 miles. I was able to get my average heart rate down to 69%, a major achievement for me.
July 28, 2007
We rode our team ride on a difficult North County loop today. The ride has two big hills, West Lilac and Champaign. I made it about half way up each of them before getting a ride to the top. Total distance for this ride was about 52 miles, with about 3000 feet of elevation gain, even though I didn't finish the big hills.
July 24, 2007
Intervals on FIesta Island today. Our average speed was 11.8. It was really windy, and we just wanted to get some miles in.
July 22, 2007
We did our noodle ride on Harbor Island today because of the OTL Tournament on FIesta Island. We did 11 miles and got tired of the traffic, the wind and the cyclists breaking all sorts of laws and endangering us.
July 21, 2007
The team ride was not as hard today. I felt a lot better. We did pretty much the same route as last Saturday, but added the Stud Loop in Rancho Santa Fe, and went up Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad to Canon. I also added Torrey this week, and made it. We ended up with 2500 feet of elevation gain in a 52 mile ride.
July 17, 2007
We started riding at Fiesta Island today, but I felt quite ill after only about 3 miles of warmup. I finished the lap and quit at 5 miles with stomach pain.
July 14, 2007
The team ride was very hard today. We rode into Rancho Santa Fe and then up to Carlsbad from UCSD. The total ride distance was about 40 miles. I skipped doing Torrey since I was so tired. I was still stiff from Spin Class Thursday. We are going to skip our noodle ride Sunday to rest a little bit.
July 12, 2007
Today was Spin Class. I did it all, even standing for 8 minutes. This is the first time I have been able to complete the entire series of exercises.
July 10, 2007
We rode early in the morning today on Fiesta Island. I would race Menchie for short distances. She beat me every time! It was great fun! My average time went up to 12.7! Another huge increase in average time. What a great, fun ride!
July 8, 2007
Menchie and I rode the Silver Strand again today with Carl and Sheryl Kuck. It was a fun noodle ride, although I was very tired from yesterday. We got in about 20 miles.
July 7, 2007
The team ride today was great. It was 38 miles long again. My main goal was to make it all the way up Torrey Pines. That's a 1.25 mile long 6.5% grade. I made it. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but I made it. After I completed Torrey, I didn't have to save any energy, so I hammered the rest of the ride. It was great! I rode up some hills at 12 -13 mph. I am getting much stronger.
July 3, 2007
We skipped our normal Sunday ride because I was still having back spasms and was really tired from the day before. I still haven't fully recoverd from whatever infection I got. The muscle spasms are gone today, but I still feel weak. We did intervalas on Fiesta Island today, but cut the ride a little short. As Carl (my riding partner) said, I had engine problems. We still managed 15.8 miles at 11.6mph.
June 30, 2007
We started our team ride at Mission Bay today. I was sick all week, and didn't feel very strong. We rode up the coast to Encinitas and back. I struggled to get to the top of Gillman, and had little energy for the rest of the ride. I made it through Del Mar both ways with no problems, but I was too weak to make it up Torrey. Menchie SAGged me up Torrey and I finished the rest of the 39 mile ride. I didn't ride or go to spin class, Thursday, because I was not feeling well and was having muscle spasms in my back. I was hoping to recover for today's ride. I am still not 100%.
June 26, 2007
Menchie and I rode intervals on Fiesta Island today. I hit some real milestones again. I averaged 13.7 on one lap, and had an average over an hour of 12.6. The average at the end of the 21 mile ride was 12.3. Great improvement!
June 24, 2007
Rode a noodle ride from Coronado to Imperial Beach and back this morning. It was pretty windy, but a fun ride. We covered about 20 miles.
June 23, 2007
Today's ride was pretty much the same as last Saturday. We rode from Carlsbad to the top of Torrey Pines and back. Today I made it to the top of Torrey under my own power. I still had to stop and rest about 2/3ds of the way up the hill, but I got back on my bike and rode the rest of the way up. At the top we saw lots of old friends, so it was really fun. We added some miles on by going up to Canon Road before turning back on Avenida Encinas. This was a hard ride of about 35 miles and 1200 feet of elevation gain. The picture above is me getting to the top with Jason and Perry.
June 19, 2007
We rode the Tuesday night ride on Fiesta Island. This was the first time I had tried riding after a Pentamadine Treatment. It didn't go so well. I was very weak and couldn't breath easily, so we stopped after 7.5 miles.
June 17, 2007
Menchie and I went to Fiesta Island for a noodle ride. This is a slow easy ride that is done the day after a longer harder ride to assist with recovery. We rode 15 miles at an average speed of 10.3mph. The amazing thing is that my heart rate averaged 65% and my max was 70% for a couple of seconds at the end. Prior to this ride, I had not been able to pedal and keep my heart rate below about 74%. Two weeks ago my average on a maximum effort ride was 10.4mph and now that is my average on a noodle ride! I am really excited by my improvement.
June 16, 2007
The Honolulu team hit the road for the first time today. My group was supposed to ride 25 miles, but we decided to go up Torrey Pines and add about 5 miles to the ride. I was really concerned about this ride because of the hill climbing repeats I did. I had to stop and rest on the hill into Del Mar, and on Torrey Pines, and eventually, I got a ride up Torrey Pines from Menchie. I made it up about 5/8 of the way. When we finished, we had 31.5 miles, and almost 1200 feet of climbing. Even though I couldn't make it up Torrey, this was a huge achievement. When I finished the ride, the whole team was waiting and cheering for me. It was a great experience. Menchie showed up a few minutes later with a birthday cake and we had a surprise birthday party for me. All in all, a great ride. I slept the rest of the day.
June 14, 2007
Menchie and I did hill climbing repeats today. We rode a longer steeper hill today. The distance was only about 6 miles with about 400 feet of elevation gain. It was very difficult. I need to work more on hill climbing.
June 12, 2007
We had a great ride on Fiesta Island today. We did intervals. I would start a one minute interval. Menchie would wait 30 seconds and then try to catch up. Usually she did. By doing this, Menchie got a good workout also. We went about 20 miles, and our average speed was 12.1mph, another big increase in our best speed.
June 8, 2007
Today was my first ride with the Honolulu team. I was in the A group and was the slowest rider in the group. We rode only 21.5 miles, but my average speed was 11.2, which is my fastest time yet. I felt great afterward. I also found out that my heart rate monitor had the wrong maximum in it and I have not been working at as high an intensity as I had thought. I can probably go even faster! Next weekend we start out on the road in Carlsbad. Scary!
June 5, 2007
More Intervals on Fiesta Island today. Today we did 15 miles at an average speed of 11 mph again. My intervals are getting faster and longer. Today I did 5 minute intervals, concentrating on speed, cadence or hill climbing. Felt real good!
June 2, 2007
Another Fiesta Island ride. This ride was 42 miles. Our average speed was 10.4 mph. This is a new high average speed for me on a long ride. I was able to keep my heart rate down pretty well also. It was really windy on the island today after the first couple of laps.
May 30, 2007
Another Fiesta Island ride today. We rode 12.75 miles, doing speed and cadence intervals. Our average speed was 11 mph. It was really windy on the island today, and we quit earlier than we had planned to, but I was tired.
May 26, 2007
Another Fiesta Island ride today. We rode 41 miles. Our average speed was 9.8 mph and it was really windy on the island today. The island was very busy today.
May 22, 2007
Rode intervals on Fiesta Island today. My average speed was 11mph today, which was my goal. I was not as strong today as I was Friday, but I still did pretty good
May 18, 2007
Fiesta Island again today. I felt much stronger today, and we completed 31.5 miles. My average speed was 10.6mph, which is 1.4 miles per hour faster than the 26 mile ride. For the first time, I felt like a real cyclist today. I was able to rest while pedaling, and my heart rate was much lower than previous rides. Pretty exciting. I think I am ready to start the Honolulu training.
May 15, 2007
We returned to Fiesta Island today. I only rode about 10 miles, although my pace was up again. I was feeling a little run down today, so I quit early.
May 13, 2007
I did hill climbing repeats today. About 5.5 miles, and 450 feet of climbing. I also rode with a radio for the first time. I have an earphone in my ear and a mike by my chin in this photo. The antenna can be seen on my back if you look close. Menchie and I were able to easily communicate this way.
May 11, 2007
I rode 26 miles today, my longest ride since last July. My pace was higher than either 20 mile ride, and my heart rate was lower. I also hit 23.3 miles per hour at one point, a new "modern" high speed record for me.
March 28, 2007
My first "modern" ride. 5 miles. It was really hard. I was exhausted at the end. Spent the rest of the day in bed.
