Racing to Save Lives
One day, I went down to the heart of San Diego to meet up with Team in Training where I learned, among other things, how they were going to force me to travel 26.2 miles, on foot. Apparently they call this “race” a “marathon”
For those of you who don’t know, the name Marathon comes from the Greek historian Herodotus, who chronicled the saga of Pheidippides (pronounced: Steve). Pheidippides was an Athenian herald who, during the battle of Marathon, had to run 26.2 miles back home when he realized he left the toilet seat up.
In honor of Pheidippides I will begin training for the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco (Yes, the same San Francisco that is famous for having really steep hills). The Nike Womens marathon boasts an average entry of 15,000 women. There are also 180 men. It has not yet been determined whether the 180 men from last year were actual entrants in the race or just started running when they saw 15,000 red-faced sweating women roaming the streets in large packs (Which coincidentally happens to be the plot of the next Stephen King novel).
On a more sensitive note, the marathon is designed to raise funds to fight leukemia and lymphoma and as we all know, neither leukemia nor lymphoma have been very helpful lately. They never pick up the check, leave their dirty dishes in the sink and painfully break down the body’s primary systems essential to survival. So I guess I might actually make a difference somehow.
Oh yeah, and from running so much I get to be all thin and attractive … well, in my case just thin. But that’s good enough for me. I’m already married.
Poor girl Please donate here to help me make my enormous goal of 3,000 bucks.
