Racing to Save Lives - Round #2
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
For the 2nd time in my life, I am training to participate in an endurance event as a participant in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Team In Training" program. Two years ago, it was for the Full Marathon at Myrtle Beach, and after 6 months of training that included 300+ miles of running, I ran the full 26.2 miles non-stop and crossed the finish line. It was the greatest physical challenge of my life, to date, and it was an awesome experience. This time, it is for the Half-Marathon at Myrtle Beach, with the goal this time to run it competitively, to complete the 13.1 mile run in 2 hours or less.
All of us in Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. We train, we endure, we run... and you make the contributions that count the most!
I'm doing this to honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. Cancer doesn't pick favorites, it's an equal-opportunity taker of lives, and it touches close to home for many people. This year, I run in honor of my uncle, Gary Good, a long-time running enthusiast, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in January of 2007.
Thankfully, due to the funding that LLS makes available to researchers, there are now new medications & treatments available today that weren't available not even 2 years ago when I first participated with TnT. Progress is being made in small but measurable steps. Think of it this way - death rates from blood cancers have dropped from one person every 9 minutes to one person every 10 minutes over the past 2 years. That's 16 more people each day who aren't lost to these cancers, and it comes about because of the efforts of LLS and its mission.
I am also running in honor of the memory of both my grandmothers, Margaret Viola Chopp, who was taken from us years too soon by Leukemia, and Edith Kathrine Morgan, who was taken from us by Hodgkin Lymphoma when I was less than a year old and leaving myself and her other grandchildren only ever knowing her through other family member's memories of her. Both were greatly loved & cherished by their families. Had they been alive today & just now diagnosed with these cancers, their chances for survival would be significantly greater due to the LLS's efforts made over the past 58 years. Just the last 20 years alone, since Team in Training was formed, have seen amazing improvements, primarily due to the research that is funded by the donations collected by Team in Training participants.
The people who fight to survive, and those who fought, and lost the battle, they are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - Finding a Cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.
I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
