Melissa Anderson's Team In Training Page
Hey all!
Believe it or not, I have begun the journey of completing a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles)! I am hoping to cross the finish line at the Steamboat Springs event on June 3rd.
Training for this event is going to be a HUGE challenge, but I have decided that it is time to do something for myself and improve my health and fitness, and most importantly I will be helping to fight cancer, which affects so many people we know and love.
Team In Training is a fundraising program of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Each year they train 35,000+ walkers, runners, and triathletes for the events of their choice. They provide excellent coaches who provide advice on training and nutrition, a training schedule, organize group runs, and keep up the motivation -which we all know I need!! Along the way I am hoping to meet some new people to share this experience with.
In return for their support, I have pledged to raise $2000 to help fund research and support for blood cancer patients and their families.
This season, we our running in honor of Janie Johnson-Cao, a Denver area native. She has been married for 17 years and has a 15-year-old daughter. She loves working with children as a Kindergarten Reading Assistant. She was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 2001. Janie has been in remission since 2002.
*Leukemia is the #1 disease that kills children, yet it affects 10 times as many adults.
*Every week 2,200 new cases are diagnosed. In that same time frame, 1,050 patients lose their hard fought battle.
*Forty years ago, only 5% of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Today, more than 89% of these children will live, thanks to research!
I would greatly appreciate any contribution and/or encouragement you can offer. All donations are tax deductible. You can donate on this site with a credit card, or send checks payable to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to me at: 838 Jasper Dr., Fruita, CO 81521.
Thanks in advance for all your help! If you have any questions, feel free to email me at: lisanderson@bresnan.net. Please pass this on to your friends, family, and businesses.
Love,
Melissa
TRAINING LOG
Week 1 Feb. 4-10 Total Training Time: 3.25 hours Total Weekly Mileage: 12 miles
Well, it's started. This is going to be a long, hard journey, but I am determined to do it. We had our first group run today, and they are a great group of people. I spend much more time walking than actually running right now, but am looking forward to improving each week. Thanks to everyone for your support and donations!Week 2 Feb. 11-17 Total Training Time: 2.5 hours Total Weekly Mileage: 9 miles
I started out the week very sore, but as the week progressed, I could feel my endurance building! I can run for longer spurts than last week.Week 3 Feb. 18-24 Total Training Time: 2.5 hours Total Weekly Mileage: 9 miles
This was a tough week for me, I have been sick as well as the kids. I did get my butt up early today and went on my group run -5 miles!! Yay! It felt good to get fresh air even though it was freezing and it snowed out last night! Hoping for a healthy upcoming week!Week 4 Feb. 25-March 2 Total Training Time: 2.75 hours Total Weekly Mileage:9.5 miles
I didn't do as well during the week as I would have liked -I am blaming it on sick kids, and starting the new job and physical therapy! :o) Nora and I stepped it up this morning, however, and did 7 miles. It was very chilly. I am definitely looking forward to warmer weather.
Week 5 March 3-9 Total Training Time: 4 hours Total Weekly Mileage:16 miles
I did 7 miles on my long run again today, but I did it 15 minutes faster than I did last week!Week 6 March 10-17 Total Training Time: 3.25 hours Total Weekly Mileage:11.75 miles
I had company all week and found it hard to get my training workouts in, and have had a severe case of shin splints the last few days. I think I need to start stretching better! Maybe I should do yoga or pilates on my off days!Week 7-9 March 18- April 7 Total Training Time: 6.75 hours Total Weekly Mileage:25 miles
Okay, I sort of fell off the wagon for a few weeks. I am trying hard to get back on track. Any words of encouragement are greatly needed!! :o) Don't worry, I am continuing to plug away. A big THANK YOU to all of you who are donating - I am at 122% of my goal and climbing. That is an awesome feeling!
