"i'm running 26.2 miles to kick cancer's ass."
joel's fundraising page
Thanks to all! We have exceeded my $5,000 goal! But we're not done yet! I've still got time to submit donations (deadline is June 17) and cancer is still out there!
I'm raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. The Society also gives aid to those who need it for treatment and subsidized living. With a strong 75% of raised funds going toward fighting le cancer The Society does an amazing job. Because of their support the 5-year survival rate has been steadily increasing over the past decades.
But we're not at 100% or anywhere close. For Hodgkin Lymphoma the survival rate is 85%. That still means of the 7,350 new cases in 2005, 1,102 will not live past 5 years. For Leukemia, of the 34,810 diagnosed 22,570 will die. Of the 15,980 people diagnosed with myeloma, only 4,680 will survive. That's a 30% survival rate. Not good. Not at all.
Most of us know someone who as been effected by blood cancers or other cancers. Some of us have lost loved ones to the battle. This is our opportunity to fight back with what we can. Like in Ghostbusters II, when all of New York City was singing when the Statue of Liberty walked over to that museum and busted it open and the Ghostbusters repelled down and kicked Vigo's ass... we can do that to cancer if we just step up.
I am not making light of cancer. Rather, I just want to demonstrate the "hollywood ending" we could give this story with a bit of giving and teamwork. Didn't that scene make you want to hi-five the person next to you? It did for me. It feels good to be a part of somthing bigger than yourself, doing something more than just sitting in front of a computer all day programing databases like me.
So I'm running a marathon. And I am asking you to please throw a contribution toward the cause.
Thank you.
