Racing to Save Lives, In Memory of My Cousin Katie

With my friend Katherine before the Brooklyn 1/2 marathon : )

Welcome to my Team In Training site!!!!

On June 21, I will be running 26.2 miles for a reason much more important than the personal challenge of completing a marathon. As a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program, I have pledged to train for the Anchorage Mayor’s Midnight Marathon to help raise $5000!!!

As you may or may not know, leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children and young adults. My family lost a wonderful young woman, my cousin Katie, to Burkitt's Lymphoma. There have been outstanding scientific advances since Katie’s passing, many of which were made possible by the funding of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Katie's mom told me the other day that Katie always feared that she would not be remembered after she passed away. I am training in her memory.

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.

And check to see if your employer offers matching gifts: http://www.matchinggifts.com/lls/

I hope you'll visit my web site often--be sure to check in for future updates on my training. Thank you so much, from me, Katie's family & the Leukemia & Lyphoma Society for your support!

Currently training 4-5 days a week, with group "long" runs on Saturdays

Long runs:

Week #1, 2/16: 5 miles (20 degrees!)

Week #2 2/23: 6.6 miles (a balmy 31 degrees!)

Week #3: 8 miles..not easy, but good

Week #4: No race, but I ran 7 miles (on my own!)

Week #5: 10 miles! I think I am officially a runner.

Week #6: Coaches wanted our bodies to have a break. Ran for period of time, about 7.5 miles I think

Week #7: 12 miles! 2 big loops through Central Park! 2 hours of running!

Week #8: 13.7 miles, just over a half-marathon...and that was tough. My calves & knees are starting to take a beating with the long hours on the run.

Week #9: 15 miles! And then a painful ice bath.

Week #10: 17 beautiful miles, over the GW bridge & into a New Jersey state park. Just because it was beautiful, doesn't mean it was easy...lots of hills made this an exhausting run.

Week #11: 18 mile tour of Manhattan...down the West Side Hwy, across the island, across the Brooklyn Bridge and back across the Manhattan Bridge & over to the West Side again. Longer than last week, but amazingly much faster (and flatter!). A very good run.

Week #12: Ran the Brooklyn 1/2 marathon. Even though I've been running this distance (and more) every weekend for the past month, finishing a race with 10,000 runners is a completely different, wonderful experience.

Week #13: Just kidding about not increasing miles....I ran 20 miles this weekend! AND, my usual running buddy was out, so I ran it all by myself. Now I pretty much have the confidence I can finish the marathon.

Week #14: 20 miles, in the sun, on 4 hours of sleep...that was tough. Definitely glad to be done with the super long runs until the marathon.

Week #15: In Vegas for Memorial Day weekend...Whipped out 7 miles on the treadmill in an hour, then back to the pool!

Week #16: Didn't realize we were tapering so early, but it was only about 12 miles since I've already run two 20 milers. At about 80% humidtity this run....was not fun. Hoping next week is better!

Week #17: Only 9.3 miles,,,on trails, in 85 degree heat and 90% humidity, yuck!

Week #18: A quick 6 miles...and it feels so weird to be done before 10am. I'm nervous but ready...only one week till the marathon!

Week #19: TO ALASKA...MARATHON TIME!

Check back for updates...

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR DONATIONS! I MADE MY GOAL OF RAISING $5000!
