It has now been one year since our daughter Trinity was diagnosed with leukemia on December 14, 2006 at the age of 2 1/2. While we had heard of leukemia before, neither Dixie nor I knew much about it. Things sure have changed over the past year and we have learned a lot.
| In the 1960s and 1970s, a child diagnosed with leukemia had a 10% chance of survival. Fast forward to 2007 and that chance is now 90%. This would not have been possible without research enabled in large part by public donations. The Team in Training program is now in its 20th year and has raised over $800 million for blood cancer research and family services via the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Trinity will be on chemotherapy for a total of two and a half years, but her prognosis is extremely positive. All bone marrow scans have shown no detectable leukemia cells since January. We have met many wonderful people in the doctors, nurses, staff, and other patients and families at Cook Children's Hospital.
While Trinity continues to progress in a best case scenario at least 4 of the children we have met during treatment have lost their battle. The fact that the cure rates are 80-90% is certainly of no comfort to those families. More research is needed to come up with what we can soon call a real cure. That research happens because of your donations. |

Shortly after Trinity's diagnosis I wanted to find out what I could do to help and found Team in Training. I joined the team and ran the Big D Marathon in April 2007. With your help I raised over $7,200 on a goal of $1,800 and had an absolutely great experience. My goal this year is to run a faster marathon and raise even more money for the society. Once over the goal amount, every dollar is given 100% to research and family services so the more we can pile on, the better! I am doing my part with heavy training and am looking forward to running the full 26.2 miles at my fastest pace yet.
