Running to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
In June I will travel to Alaska to run a half marathon to raise funds to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, hodgkins disease and myeloma. I will be running this half marathon in memory of a very special and courageous man. HIs name is Don Jones and he was my first love, best friend and husband for forty-six years, six months and fifteen days. Don was a truly amazing husband, father and grandfather. He was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on October 21, 2004 and lost his battle with leukemia on April 15, 2007.
When he was first diagnosed with leukemia he was given a 10% chance to survive the first hospital stay of thirty days. Being the fighter he was, he suprised everyone and after three more rounds of chemo he was in remission. A worldwide search was initiated for a bone marrow match. Unfortunately none was found. He received a stem cell transplant on February 23, 2005 which helped keep his leukemia in remission. Seven months later he completed the Chicago Marathon. Quite a feat for a healthy person! In July of 2006 his leukemia returned and we knew his only chance for long term survival was a bone marrow transplant. A match was still not available. During the next several months of weekly visits to Dr. Collins at UTSW for transfusions, he never lost his sense of humor and positive attitude.
Team in Training is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's largest fund-raising program bringing in over eighty-five million nationally last year!
Each participant in the program pledges to raise a certain amount of money during the four to five months they train for their event. I have set a personal goal to raise $10,000.00 while training for the Mayor's Midnight Sun Half Marathon in Alaska.
Seventy-five per cent of every dollar raised goes to research, patient services and education. A substantial portion of the funds raised by the North Texas team goes to UTSW here in Dallas for research. The money that I will raise for The Leukemia & Lymphoma society is fulfilling, but the most important and inspirational part of my training is knowing that my hard work may make a difference of the lives of others battling leukemia.
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission to find a cure.
