Ernest Lewis's Marathon to Fight Cancer

Running for a Cure

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I am training to participate in the Mayor's Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska, June 23, 2007, as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin Lymphoma and Myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this difficult 26.2 mile event in honor of all individuals who are battling these blood cancers, other cancers, the families, victims, and survivors.

I will be running specifically for Pat Schaefer, sister of my good friend Mary Kern, who passed away at the tender age of 20 from Lymphoma and Al Manke III, nephew of my ex-wife Martha, who thankfully is a survivor of Hodgkins Lymphoma. I am also running for my friend Linda B. who even while suffering from cancer herself still volunteers for the Victory Center, which offers care programs for individuals with cancer and their families, and still has time and energy to sponsor and participate in fundraising and awareness events like the national Light The Night Walk. I am also running for the survivors and victims of other cancers through Team in Training because research to prevent Luekemia and Lymphoma has helped spur advances in other cancer research: my mother, Nga Gnass survivor of breast cancer, my late Grandpa Morgan victim of a brain tumor, my Uncle Jack survivor of colon cancer, my friend Karen Landis survivor of breast cancer, and my late friend Karen Hylan victim of a brain tumor.

I will also be running for my friend Andrea Loch 4 year survivor of breast cancer, Jene Roach (my friend Judy Kehrle’s aunt) recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Bob Ufer and Doug Andrews (my friend Michelle Tambor’s brothers-in-law) survivors of cancer, Bill Andrews (Michelle Tambor’s friend) battling cancer, and a very special friend; Herb Landis, husband of my good friend Karen Landis whom I mentioned above. He has worked through 2 surgeries for lung cancer and a brain tumor. Herb is a survivor.

All of these people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! If you have a friend or relative that you would like me to run in their honor, please send me their name and their story. They are my inspiration and I will be carrying the names of all our honorees throughout the marathon!

I will be training 40-50+ miles per week and have a goal of completing the marathon in 3 hours 20 minutes, my Boston qualifying time. I've chosen a large fundraising goal and a difficult marathon to run because all of us have someone in our lives touched by cancer. The need to help is great. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission to find a cure.

You can use this link to donate online quickly and securely. You will receive a confirmation by email of your donation.

On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and all of our honorees, thank you very much for your support. I really appreciate your generosity!

Happy Holidays! :-) Ernie
