Erika's Team in Training Fundraising Page
Shooting for $20,000 in 2008!
Welcome to my Team In Training Fundraising Page!
Today there are very few people that do not know someone that has been affected by some form of cancer. In 2007, over 135,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with a blood related cancer. There are currently over 820,000 people in the U.S. living with a blood related cancer. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is fighting for each of these patients and their families. The Society has come a long way… The five year survival rate for Leukemia in 1987 was less than 55% and we are now at 95%. Lymphoma has gone from 52% to 63% and Myeloma from 12% to nearly 35%. This has all been possible due to the money raised by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
2008 is a very special year… Twenty years ago, a man named Bruce Cleland rounded up 38 friends and trained to run the New York City Marathon in honor of his baby daughter Georgia, who had leukemia. His team rose over $322,000 for The Society! They referred to themselves as the "team in training," and the name stuck. Twenty years later, the Society's Team In Training program is the largest endurance sports team in the world and has seen over 340,000 participants cross the finish line of their half/full marathon, century bike ride or triathlon. Remarkably, they have raised more than $800 million dollars for lifesaving cancer research and to help blood cancer patients live longer, better lives.
As I said, 2008 is a special year… not only is it Team in Training’s 20th Anniversary, we have our sights on a HUGE mile marker. In 2008, we hope to reach the $1 BILLION dollar mark! That is $1 Billion dollars that everyday people like you and I have raised for The Society. We took time out of our busy schedules, not only to achieve a personal fitness goal, but also to do something bigger than ourselves and help cancer patients and their families!
I have been volunteering with Team in Training for over three years now. I have completed 6 events, including 3 Disney Triathlons, the Rock & Roll Marathon in San Diego, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe and the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. Through those events I have raised over $22,000 for The Society! I never imagined when I was sitting in an information meeting over 3 years ago that I would keep coming back.
In 2008, I will be completing my 7th and 8th Team in Training events. I would like to honor the 20th Anniversary and shoot for HUGE $$… My goal is to raise $20,000 in 2008!
I hope you consider being part of the 20th Anniversary, helping me reach my personal $20,000 goal, and helping Team in Training reach $1 Billion dollars!
