Jackie Wray's Team In Training Page
Racing to Save Lives
I received the news on December 4, 2007. My baby cousin Julia Watson had a tumor the size of an adult woman’s fist in her chest. It was T-cell lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. It was almost impossible to imagine a baby of only 11 months battling cancer-- especially when only a few weeks earlier she was affectionately called the “party baby” from all the fun and excitement she had (and brought to the rest of the family) at our grandma Louise’s 80th birthday party. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training is an important way that we can be advocates for cancer patients and honor Julia. The event will be April 27, 2008, in North Platte and will include a 700 meter swim, a 14 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. In gratitude for the lifesaving treatment that Julia is receiving, as effort to show support for her parents and siblings, and to fund research that could bring life and hope to many others affected by this disease, I am asking for your sponsorship and generosity. Please rest assured that your donation will be put to good use. In fiscal year 2007, the Society invested $66.5 million to support more than 396 researchers in 15 countries. The Society also provides financial assistance to patients, sponsors scientific conferences, produces educational materials, and runs dozens of family support groups nationwide. My goal is to raise $1,800 by March 7. Any amount you contribute is greatly appreciated. All donations are 100% tax-deductible. Supporters (individuals or groups) who donate and/or raise at least $100 will be recognized by having their names written on the shirt that I will wear to complete the race (unless, of course, you wish to remain anonymous). This shirt will be given to Julia after the event as a special keepsake. Please pass this website along to everyone you know, including your friends, family, co-workers, philanthropic groups, and churches. The more people we join in this effort, the closer we can be to our ultimate goal--- curing blood cancers. Please also continue to keep Julia and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
