Racing to Save Lives

My Mom - Her motto "One Day at a Time...." is what I've adopted as I train for June's Marathon!

Hey everyone - Guess what I'm doing? This couch potato is training to run a marathon on June 23, 2007!! Can you believe it?? Evenings and weekends are now spent training to race for a great cause.

Every five minutes, someone in the United States learns they have leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and every ten minutes, a child or adult dies from one of these diseases, there is still no cure.

I am training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. The Society funds research, provides direct aid to patients in need, and offers the most comprehensive program of services available for these cancers.

I'm completing this event in honor of my Mother, who valiantly fought a tough battle with lymphoma for eight years before losing the battle at age thirty-eight. She left behind three young daughters. I was only 15 and my sisters were only 13 and 8 when my Mom died. Throughout her battle with cancer my Mom kept such an optimistic attitude and had such perseverance all the way to the end. She taught me and my sisters to never give up. So my goal is to not give up in my training and to make it to the finish line at the marathon, one day at a time!

I am also racing to honor my neighbor Ryan who successfully battled through leukemia at aged 16 and is now attending college in Texas. For my Mother, for Ryan, and for all individuals who have or are battling blood cancers, I am running because they cannot. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I will be running the Mayor's Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska on June 23, 2007! I won't be able to train for this event alone, I need your support. I would be honored if you would help me reach my goal for this race. I have set my personal goal to collect at least $4700 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I hope you will join me on this journey by making a tax-deductible donation to support my campaign and help advance the Society's mission. Every penny helps - No donation is too small! I promise you, there is no better feeling than knowing you were a part of an amazing mission that successfully helped so many people!

Here are some examples of how your donations will be put to work:

  • $500 provides a patient with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma with patient aid to support medical treatment and to travel to medical appointments for one year.
  • $500 allows 10 patients to login to a Webcast and hear the latest information about treatment for their disease.
  • $400 funds a Family Support Group program for one year.
  • $100 provides three patients access to an information teleconference.
  • $100 allows four patients to make a first connection with a trained peer counselor.

I want to thank you in advance for your love and support! This is an exciting challenge for me so I thank you for choosing to support my efforts to make a difference. I will be thinking of each of you as I cross the finish line on June 23, 2007.
