Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
OK, call me crazy, but there is something that I have wanted to do, but never thought I’d really be able to do it. No, I’m not going to climb Mount Everest or swim the English Channel, but I want to run a marathon to help people who are dealing with cancer. So, this summer I joined a fabulous group called Team In Training (TNT), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s endurance training program, and I will participate in my very first marathon in Bermuda on January 16th, 2005.
Team In Training (TNT) exists to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. It also looks to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Every year leukemia and other blood cancers strike some 107,900 Americans, while claiming more than 60,500 lives in the United States alone. Leukemia is one of the leading causes of death in children between the ages of 1-15. The good news is that the survival rate has risen from 4% in 1960 to 81% in the last decade. This is in part due to the money that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has raised to aid researchers in their fight to find cures for this disease.
TNT is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s largest fund-raising program, bringing in over 73 million dollars this past year alone. Each participant in the program pledges to raise a certain amount of money during the 4-5 months they train for their event. I have set a personal goal to raise at least $5,000 for my Bermuda International Marathon! Of that amount, over 75% of the money raised will be used by the Society for research, patient services and education.
I am committed to the training and reaching my personal goal of finishing the marathon. You can help me as I strive towards my goal in the coming months, both financially and physically. The money that I will raise for research is fulfilling, but the most important and inspirational part of my training is knowing that my hard work could make a difference in the lives of my Honored Teammate. I am running to honor the memory of my grandmother, Anna Laura Brown, who died of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1996.
The memory of my grandmother and those who are currently battling blood cancers are the reasons I am committing myself to this goal. With this inspiration how can I not fight my way to the finish line? It is a chance to embody a glimmer of hope for those who are battling blood cancers and to remember those who have lost their battle.
I am asking for your support as I take on this challenge. Did you know that a marathon is 26.2 miles??? Measure the distance the next time you are in your car, and think of me running that far on my two little feet. Like I said before, over 75% of my $5,000 goal is used for research, patient services and education. Your donation is tax-deductible and NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL. (But big ones are appreciated just as much! ;-)
I want to thank you in advance for your love and support! This is an exciting time and I hope you will choose to support me in my efforts to make a difference.
All the best,
Evelyn Bourne-Gould

Update: September 13, 2004 So far I have logged over 30 miles in training. My stamina is improving and I feel really great. This coming weekend my training run will be five miles. Soon I'm going to need a new pair of sneakers. . .

My Saturday run was pretty rough. I did seven miles, but I felt like I was dragging my butt for the entire seven miles. Next week will be better.November 12, 2004
I'm mending from an injury, but I'm not giving up. I was up to twelve miles, and as my knee improves I'll get back on track. I am so thankful for all who have given to the L & L Society and have supported my marathon run. I feel like my efforts are going to support a great cause.
I'm up to close to $1,000 dollars in donations so far, but I still have a ways to go and time is short.
