Kristen Hendrix's Team In Training Page
Racing to Save Lives, One Mile at a Time
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Hi. My name is Kristen Hendrix. I am a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. Team in Training is a comprehensive endurance-training program for runners, walkers, cyclists and tri-athletes to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The goal of Team in Training is to increase funding to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission while promoting fitness and healthy life styles.
As a member of Team in Training, I am raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am asking you to help by making a contribution. Each donation, whether small or large, helps accelerate cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Each donation brings hope to the patients and families who are on the front lines of the battle against these diseases.
I am training to participate in two endurance events, the Country Music Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 29, 2007, and America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, a full 100-mile Century Cycle Ride around Lake Tahoe, Nevada, on June 3, 2007.
If you think life is easy, run a marathon. So, I did. I completed the Nike Women’s Marathon (26.2 miles), a Race to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in San Francisco, CA, on October 22, 2006, with a time of 5:09:32. If you still think life is easy, run the next marathon faster. So, I did that too. I completed the Mardi Gras Marathon (26.2 miles) in New Orleans, LA, on February 25, 2007, with a time of 4:35:23.
If you still think life is easy, imagine being on chemotherapy!
I joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training because I wanted to do more than just complete these challenges. Team in Training is a life changing experience. When you cross the finish line, you do so knowing that each step or pedal stroke you took made a profound difference in someone else’s life. I have committed myself to the Team in Training program by becoming a mentor and helping other participants meet their fund-raising and fitness goals.
I wasn’t always like this. In August of 2001, I was hospitalized for 8 days with a deep venous thrombosis (DVT or blood clot). I was diagnosed with having a hypercoagulable state with a Protein S Deficiency. Protein S Deficiency is a rare clotting disorder, a genetic blood autosomal dominant disorder that predisposes individuals to recurrent venous thrombosis. After that, I was afraid to move or be active because I could have a blood clot and not know it. I was leading a lethargic life, constantly fearful, and was not living life to its fullest. On August 1, 2005, I weighed almost 220 pounds and wore a size 18. After just one year, I weighed 125 pounds, lost over 70 inches, and now wear a size 2/4. I lost 95 pounds by changing my lifestyle to include a healthy, nutritiously balanced diet along with regular (daily) exercise. Of course I couldn't stop there. I have become a certified Madd Dog Athletics Spinning® instructor and a certified YogaFit® instructor, teaching at Body Benefits in Ridgeland, MS.
Now that I am in the best shape of my life, on the outside as well as on the inside, I am using my new found knowledge of fitness and a healthy lifestyle to really make a difference.
I would be honored to have you make a donation on my behalf. Not my behalf, I'm healthy and capable of not only walking, but running and cycling these events. Rather, please make a donation on behalf of all those struggling just to put one foot in front of the other. Any contribution that you are willing to give is greatly appreciated. If you know of any companies that might be interested in becoming a corporate sponsor, please forward this web page to those companies. Please forward this web page to as many people as you can to encourage them to donate as well.
I am participating in these events in honor of my friend, Peg Welch, a seven-year survivor of Hodgkin Lymphoma, Dee Flynn Stallings who was diagnosed with Lymphoma in August 2006, and my law school roommate's mother, Mary Brouillett, who was diagnosed with Hodgin Lymphoma in the Winter of 2004. They know first hand what it is like to battle a blood cancer. I am also participating in these events in memory of Larry Lenoir and Dallas Yellot, who both lost their battle with Leukemia.
In addition, I am running in honor of our Team in Training honored teammate Ramona Harrell, who is currently winning her battle against Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Ramona is taking Gleevec, a drug that was developed due to research made and funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Ramona has said that “life feels almost normal thanks to this miracle drug.”
These people are the real heroes on our team, and your support is needed to cross the ultimate finish line – a cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team in Training and help advance the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission.
On behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thank you very much for your time and support.
Thanking you in advance,
Kristen An Horton Hendrix
