Damian Magarelli's Team In Training Page
Tri-ing to Save Lives!
Hello, and welcome to my Team In Training home page. I'm training for the Columbia triathlon and raising funds to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission: To cure blood related cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
I'm donating the earnings from my part time gig playing music at a local restaurant, so any expenses incurred by my participation in the event will be covered by my own donations. That means YOUR contribution will go completely towards research and patient services!
I'm training in honor of my dear friend, Bruce Cleland, the founder of Team In Training. I've been lucky enough to know him because of my position as a campaign director with the Maryland Chapter of LLS.
Bruce started the TNT program in honor of his daughter, Georgia, twenty years ago. He completed the Sea Gull Century here in Salisbury ( on ROLLER BLADES! ) in 2005 and was beaming as he crossed the finish line. This was after skating for 8 hours in a torrential downpour; a completetly miserable day. In his wonderful New Zealand accent, he told me, "This was the best event I've ever done, mate." And he meant it! He was training to do it again in 2006 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer. As he sat in his car contemplating his diagnosis, the Tom Petty song, "I Won't Back Down" was playing on the radio. It became Bruce's mantra, and it's going to be mine as I train for the "Beast of the East", the Columbia Tri!
I feel very privileged to be training in his honor. Because of his vision, thousands of lives have been saved, improved and lengthened. He's completely selfless, modest and kind...and he's a pretty good guitar player too! I'm happy to say that he's made a remarkable recovery and is planning on running the Baltimore marathon with us in the Fall to celebrate the 20th anniversary of TNT. I plan on participating in that event with him.
I'm also training in memory of the brave and beautiful children I've known who have lost their battles with blood related cancers. I'll be racing in memory of courageous kids like Kati Fisher, Ben Layton, Ginger Lasley, Kamryn Lambert, and Reggie Winder, whose lives were cut short by leukemia.
If you would like to honor someone with your donation, please email me with their name and story at magarellid@aol.com
I will proudly wear your loved ones name on my jersey on race day.
I believe that we can eradicate blood related cancers in the next 10 years. With your help, we can get one step closer to a cure and a time when no family will suffer the loss of a precious and beautiful child (or adult ) to these devastating diseases. Please help us cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma by making a secure, tax deductible donation right here on my web site.Or, you may send a check made out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to:
