Paul McCarron's Team In Training Page
Racing to Save Lives
Part X… I'm currently in training for my 10th Boston Marathon (4/21/08) with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training” program.
I continue to be committed to the Society’s efforts through the Survivors’ (Apryl, Jack, Jason, Melissa, MichaelH and Walter) and the Team’s Honored Heroes’ (John, Katie, Lindsey and MichaelB) inspirational stories of courage and hope. And for those who lived courageous and inspirational lives (Ed, Ellen, Gary, Joey, John, Laura and Paul), in their honor, there is more work to be done. Never far from thoughts is Dr. Cynthia Lucero, a 2002 TNT teammate, whose life was dedicated to helping others.
The Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The following survival information was obtained from the Society's Web site:
- The relative five-year survival rate has more than tripled in the past 46 years for patients with leukemia. In 1996-2002 the overall relative survival rate was nearly 49 percent.
- The five-year relative survival rate for non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients has risen from 47.3 percent in 1974 to 60.2 percent in 2001 and the five-year relative survival rate for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma has increased from 73 percent in 1975-1977 to 86 percent in 1996-2002.
- Current statistical databases show that overall five-year survival in patients with myeloma has shown a significant improvement since the 1960s: 12 percent in 1960-1963 for whites to 33 percent from 1996-2002 for all races.
I once again humbly ask for your support with these fundraising endeavors. Please remember support comes in two different forms, donations and encouragement
Thank you very much for your support!...
Paul
