Racing to Save Lives

My honored hero, Joanne

When I stop to reflect on the many things I am so thankful for, my family, my friends and good health top my list. This year, I've decided to "give back" by taking the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those struggling with cancer. As my way to show my gratitude for all the good in my life, I have committed to raising $5,000 for cancer research. I will be running the 2008 Boston Marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program. The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to find a cure for blood-related cancers and to improve the quality of the lives of patients and their families. My very dear friend, Joanne, said to me recently, “Hop on board that train and enjoy the ride with all the twists and turns. There will be wonderful moments that will carry you through those bumps along the journey and be patient… we all will get to our destination, that train station, just hold your seat and make the ride count for all it's worth!!” Unfortunately, Joanne is my inspiration for this goal. After being diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in November of 2006, Joanne underwent surgery. Once she recovered from surgery she received six sessions of chemotherapy. Amazingly, she continued to work and faced her treatments with such amazing courage and optimism. Joanne was "cancer-free" for 5 months and she exhibited a newfound vitality and an appreciation for life that people who have survived what she has tend to possess. Just as she began looking forward to her new life, her cancer returned. She is currently undergoing another round of chemotherapy and as she summons up the strength and courage to beat cancer for the second time, I am going to run the Boston Marathon to honor Joanne, my very dear friend and the source of my inspiration. I would like to give you the opportunity to join me in making a difference. Would you please consider supporting me in this incredible journey? I would appreciate any donation you can make or even words of encouragement you have to offer. Let's reach this goal together. If you have a loved one that you would like me to run in honor or in memory of, please share their name with me and it would be my privilege to wear it on my singlet. I'll think of them along with Joanne as I run 26.2 miles on marathon day. Thank you for choosing to make a difference!
