Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
On Saturday, May 3rd, I will take part in the Indy mini-marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. This will be my first marathon type event and I have decided to participate in honor of my mother, Rita Winters and for Jonnae Taylor, both diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
My mother died after a very short bout of ALL. Jonnae however, a strong and brave fifteen year old that I met last year, is continuing to fight. Originally diagnosed with ALL in 2005, followed by two years of treatment, Jonnae celebrated going into remission, only to learn one month later that she had relapsed. Intense chemo and radiation treatments prepared her for a bone marrow transplant from her brother on December 21. She was released earlier this year to stay at a nearby hotel with her mother and had to visit the hospital 2-3 times a week for follow-ups and further treatment. Just recently she has finally been released to go home. Her enthusiasm and positive determination is truly inspiring.
Every five minutes another person is diagnosed with a blood-related cancer, and every 10 minutes, another blood cancer patient loses their battle. Over 823,000 Americans are estimated to be living with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma. On the threshold of a new era, the hope is that with accelerated funding for research, all leukemia and related cancers will be curable. Leukemia is the number-one-killing disease of children yet it affects nice times as many adults.
So, why am I doing this? I want to honor my mother and Jonnae. I also want to raise money for blood cancer research.
You can help find a cure by sponsoring my mini-marathon participation. My goal is to raise $2,400. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution of $13 ($1 for each mile I will walk), $25, $50, $75 or whatever you can offer. All contributions will be greatly appreciated as every dollar donated does make a difference! Checks should be made out to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and mailed to me, or you can donate by credit card here on my web site (over to the left).
With the support of generous people like you, together we can help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society continue to make strides in crossing the ultimate finish line, finding a cure.
In advance, thank you so much for your support!
