Running to Save Lives
As you probably already know, I’m training to run the Chicago Marathon on October 7, 2007. It’ll be my first marathon. However, I’m not just running this race for myself, I’m also competing as a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.
My dear friend Callie, whom I’ve known since our first day on the high school track team years and years ago, is training to run the marathon with me. (And she is raising funds for another important cause, the St. Jude’s Children’s Fund). You can follow our progress at our Chicago Marathon 2007 Blog.
I joined Team in Training because running a marathon is a new territory for me, and I knew that it would make a huge difference to me to have a coach and a team of other athletes to support me in this goal. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides that same kind of support for cancer patients: with patient education, support groups, and most importantly, the relentless search for a cure, cancer patients don’t have to face their disease alone.
My fundraising goal is $2000. Please consider making a donation today! Here’s an idea of what your donation will support:
The LLS believes that finding a cure for blood cancers is an important step in finding a cure for all types of cancer. As federal funding for cancer research has been cut in recent years, we depend more and more on private foundations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to provide research and patient support. Cancer affects all of us: please give whatever you can to help in the fight. I promise, I’ll do all the running, but I need your support!
Please support the Society with a donation: running a marathon is a huge goal for me, but it’s just a small step in the much more important work that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is doing. Thanks in advance!
Love,
Jen

Oct 12 update: Thank you thank you thank you!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the LLS! Together we raised $2274!
As many of you heard, the Chicago Marathon had to be canceled 3.5 hours into the race due to extreme weather conditions. I am proud to say, however, that I was able to finish the entire course. It was more difficult than I could have imagined, but I have come out of it with a new, determination and inner strength. Let's hope that the money raised for the LLS will help cancer patients face their challenges with the same, tough, scrappy, don't-tell-me-what-I-can-or-can't-do attitude that I encountered amongst hundreds of other marathoners this weekend.
Will there be more marathons in my future? You bet!
You are all my source of inspiration, from the coldest February days along the lake front to the blazing heat of the 22nd mile of the marathon. When the running got the toughest, I reminded myself that there were 2274 dollars and more than 60 individual donors that believed that I could do this. Thank you.
