Katie's Running the Nike Women's Half Marathon
Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I am training to participate in an endurance event (the Nike Women's Half Marathon in SF) as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission. If someone in your life has been impacted by leukemia or lymphoma, please let me know so that I can race in their honor.
I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
Total Training Miles = 100
Details for Bay Area Cheerleaders
Some of you have told me that you are interested in showing up on race day to cheer me on. That makes me feel great! I am thrilled that I'll get to see your happy faces. So, you want details about how to be a spectator.
- Please email me and let me know that you'll be attending. Then I can at least know who to be on the lookout for!
- Download the course map so you can see where the race takes place, and where the official cheering sections are. You'll need to navigate to "the race" and then "the course" to get to the map.
9/22 - Nike Preview in San Francisco - 10 MILES!
Now, on to the training update. Lots of you have told me how impressed you are with the mileage we are doing (I ran 10 miles on our long run yesterday!). I have to admit, I'm impressed too. And tired! But our Saturday run was great - we got a preview of the Nike Course, so we know better what to expect. We met at Ocean Beach in San Francisco at 7:00 AM and were out on the course by 7:15. We ran from the Windmill in Golden Gate Park up through Land's End, Sea Cliff and Baker Beach. Then we turned around and ran back through the Outer Richmond, past Lincoln Park and the VA Hospital, down past Louie's and Cliff House and back to the Windmill. That was six miles.
So we headed into the park to finish out our last 4 miles. We ran past the buffalo, the model boat lake, and speedway meadows. We ran just past the 19th Avenue overpass, and turned around at mile 8 to head back to the windmill. My running buddy Rebecca and I got big cheers from our team as we crossed the 10-mile marker -- and instructions to head over to the complimentary massage tables.
It was a long run, but I feel confident that if I can do 10 miles, I can do 13.1!
9/15 - 8 miles in Walnut Creek
This weeks runs have been easier. I did about 16 miles total, 8 of which I ran on Saturday. I think I actually felt the "runner's high" for the first time on Tuesday - when I felt better at the end of the run than at the beginning. Eight miles was long for me, but I did it! I appreciate everyone's support and encouragement so much. Thank you!! 9/1 - 7.5 miles on the Iron Horse Trail
8/25 - 6 mile long run
Six miles feels pretty long. We were at the Berkeley Marina, in the cool and the wind, which made the run much easier. My times are pretty consistent, even as i am going further distances, so that is really good. I'm way stronger and am feeling pretty good. My knees and ankles are a little sore, but I am icing and resting.
8/18 - 5 miles. So, today we ran five miles. This is without a doubt the farthest I have ever run at once. I ran on the way out, and ran/walked the way back. I am slow. But I did go 5 miles. Running most of the way.
8/17 - Buddy Run #2 Today was my second buddy run. We did 2.5 miles - definitely getting easier. It is so cool to train with so many amazing women for the largest women's marathon in the world. I feel lucky to have the support and to be able to raise money for such an amazing cause.
8/15 - Cross Training Day Today is a cross training day. I might go for a bike ride or take Santiago for a long hike. Yesterday I did my 30 minutes of running at the Acalanes track. I like the track because i can easily see how far i have gone, but it is also unshaded and gets a little monotonous. But, I'm running further this week in 30 minutes than I was running last week. That is a good sign.
8/13 - Running with the dog
So today I tried running with Santiago. It wasn't too bad -- I need to work with him to stay close when we are running so he can't cross in front of me. The run itself was easier - my body is getting used to it and my legs feel stronger.
8/11 - Coach's Workout #2 and Marathon University
Today's run was 3 miles - I had a great new running buddy (Julie) for most of the way, which was great. Then we went to Marathon University for training about stretching, hydration and injury prevention.
8/9 - Buddy Run 1 Thanks to Yvonne and the DV Summer Team, I made it 2.5 miles. Yay! Marathon University and more photos after Sunday. xxxooo
8/4/07 - Training Run #1
I am, without any doubt, at the back of the pack of the team-in-trainers. I am a slow runner, especially right now. But someone has to be last - so why not me?
7/24 - Deciding to do it
I signed up for the Nike Women's Half Marathon today. I'm excited and nervous because I haven't run seriously since I was in high school. But the gals at T-in-T assure me that they can get me off the couch and crossing the finish line in 12 weeks. Cross your fingers for me. Keep track of my activity here!
