Freakishly Strong - Team Brenda!

Once again, God has blessed me to be able to train with TNT. In June 2001, Hope Young and I walked 26.2 miles in our first Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego with TNT (that's us before the race)!! On October 21, 2007, my little sister Tonsa and I will run a half marathon in San Francisco in honor of Brenda Donato.

On March 21, 2007, Lisa Dunn, a career nurse and Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinator at UCSF sent an e-mail, asking TNT alumni to join “TEAM BRENDA” in honor of Brenda Donato, a TNT honoree. Lisa described Brenda as “a fiery, energetic, bright ray of light” who was facing down death “in an amazing state of gratitude.” Brenda, a wife and mother of 2 young boys, was suffering from a rare complication of her treatment for leukemia after having ran a marathon, a half marathon and completing a triathlon. Lisa reported how amazing it was that Brenda was using her experience to be in service to other people. On April 14, 2007, Brenda Donato, leukemia survivor and TNT honoree of Team Balance, passed on to a better place.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training is dedicated to raising money to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma. Leukemia is the number one disease killer of children between 1 and 14. Every 5 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every day I learn of another elder whose presence and wisdom I appreciated, who passed on because of leukemia or some other type of blood cancer. Founded in 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has funneled more than $100 million to research to find the cure; only 25% of the funds it raises go toward covering its overhead expenses.

This event has meaning not only because I believe we need a cure for blood cancer, but also because my sister Tonsa will be racing with me. In February 2007, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, it was very early, and having successfully completed her chemo and radiation therapy, she will be able to run again, joyfully, and “in an amazing state of gratitude” with her big sister in the Nike Marathon.

I am inspired by the strength of Brenda Donata and my sister Tonsa (two amazing "freakishly strong" women) and the tenacity of my entire team. I am proud to be a member of "Team Brenda." Whenever we walk or run, we are often referred to as "the purple people." If you've seen my law office, you know that I am right at home with these folks (smile)!!!

Please make a generous donation to help us find a cure in our lifetime. Thank you for your support. God Bless.
