Team Katy Runs (and Bikes and Swims) Again!

Eric and Josie helping cheer on participants and pass out sports drink at the 2007 St. Louis Marathon. Josie’s mom made the cheerleading outfits! Both are leukemia survivors!

Hello!

As many of y’all know Eric and I are huge LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) supporters. Ever since his CML (chronic mylogenous leukemia) diagnosis on October 14, 2005, the LLS has been there to help. The research to create Gleevec was funded by the LLS through the money raised by Team in Training. Gleevec not only helps a high percentage of CML patients, including Eric, but it has offered insight for scientists to create other targeted chemotherapies that attack cancer cells only. Unfortunately some CML patients’ leukemic cells are unaffected by Gleevec, so more research is needed!

And although Gleevec is saving Eric's life, he likes to remind people that those "little brown pills" are no fun. He is regularly fatigued and sick.

In order to help the society, I’ll be participating in my 3rd Team in Training event. This time, I’ll be completing the Memphis Triathlon in May 2008. It in-cludes a 1.5K swim, 40K bike, and 10K run (.93m, 24.8m, 6.2m). Currently I am not a strong swimmer and a rather inexperienced biker, so I’m depending on my coach for help!

The very exciting thing about this event, besides trying something new, is Eric is applying to be the patient speaker in Memphis at the pasta party the night before the race. If he is chosen he’ll have the opportunity to share his story and inspire Team in Training participants from around North America.

We are both very excited to embark on this journey. We hope you will join us through your well wishes and fundraising support. I will need to raise $4200 for this event. 15% ($630) of that amount goes to travel, housing, entry fees, and other miscellaneous expenses for my participation in the triathlon. Through the generosity of our family we have already raised that amount. So be assured that 100% of you donation will go straight to the organization to support other people affected by blood-related cancers. All donations are tax deductible.
