Grant Welland's Team In Training Page
Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Again I am training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. I will run a 1/2 marathon in Anchorage on the 17th of June. However, the main effort is to raise funds for LLS. The nonprofit, LLS, uses its funds to support cancer research and families in need.
LLS pledges at least 75 % of funds raised go to the causes above. In a recent fund raising event, last Autumn, the goal was super-achieved with 88 % going to dedicated causes.
My honored teammates include Kelly and my daughter Kara. Their pictures are above. Kara's puppy, Niko, is now approaching adulthood.
Kara has the rare neuro-endocrine cancer. She has had major surgeries, several focused radiation treatments and enumerable chemo treatments. Currently, she is negotiating with her doctors and the insurance company to secure affordable treatment of the new drug, Sutent, which she needs. Sutent is extremely expensive.
Kelly discovered she was suffering from Hodgkin's Lymphoma over six years ago. Fortunately, she had health insurance. Her cancer was detected early. Kelly went through three months in radiation treatment. Once treated her cancer went into remission. Her cancer remains in remission, but she knows her 'normal life' will be punctuated by scheduled visits to her oncologist. She cannot know now if her cancer will occur again.
I thank those of you who have helped in the past. I am asking for help again. If you haven't helped in the past my request gives you another opportunity. Cancer is a major health problem of modern life. Your donations are needed, appreciated and deductible.
