For Melanie

Melanie Fastrup was a second grade teacher with a Cheshire cat smile and a great sense of humor. Three years ago, “Mel” was diagnosed with lymphoma. Determined to fight back, she joined Team in Training. That's where we met. TNT members participate in endurance events while raising money to battle cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. In 2005, Mel walked eighteen miles in the San Diego Marathon, raising $8,000 for fellow cancer survivors.

In the meantime, she struggled with the baggage of blood cancer: transfusions, a spleen removal, wearying rounds of chemo. Yet her connection with Team in Training remained strong. It allowed Mel to show family and friends that even with cancer you could stay involved in life. "It's easy,” she once said. “Live like you're dying."

Over a month ago, November 29, she caught an infection during a blood transfusion. Her battered system couldn't hang on. Melanie Fastrup died, leaving behind husband, Dan, and three young daughters, Leah, Millie and Natalie.

On January 14, I'll run the Phoenix Marathon. I’ll cover the 26.2 miles in 4 hours and 30 minutes. I’ll be wearing a ribbon with Mel’s name, honoring her courageous spirit. I'm asking you to help me in this battle against blood cancers. Please contribute generously. Click a button on this site or send a check made out to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society c/o:

There's still time to donate. The money goes to fund research and provide support to patients and their families enduring the siege of cancer. Through my running and your giving, I believe we will one day find a cure. In the meantime, let's live like we're dying.

Training updates will be posted at my blog Write Enough. Thanks for your support!
