Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page!
I am training to participate in the Mayor's Half Marathon in Alaska this June as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. Team In Training's primary focus is raising funds for the Society to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma. In early January, I was fortunate enough to watch a dear friend (pictured to the right) run in my honor in the Rock N Roll marathon in Phoenix.
As most of you know, I had my own battle with cancer last year -- stage IV B-cell lymphoma. However, I am proud to say that I am in remission and taking on a new challenge this year in helping the Society with their mission. I will be running in honor of 5-year-old Kate Hansen who is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. (To learn more about her story, please visit http://katesleukemiajournal.blogspot.com/)
My fiancee, Tommy, will also be fundraising and competing in this year's marathon. He will be there with me every step of the run, just as he was during my treatment. I ask that you please visit his site as well, at www.active.com/donate/tntga/tommywaterworth.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is committed to curing all blood cancers and helping patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $550.8 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers. They provide financial assistance to patients; sponsor scientific conferences around the country; produce educational materials and videos; and run dozens of Family Support Groups nationwide. Because they receive no federal funding, they depend on donations for continued support of these needed programs.
I ask that you consider making a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission.
Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
March 11 Update: We're almost 2 months into training with only 3 months to go until the race! I am finally up to 5 miles in a single run. (For me, that's amazing!) I have well exceeded my initial fundraising goal, but I ask that everyone still consider making a donation. EVERY dollar helps those in need!
March 31 Update: Spring is finally here -- which is making our morning runs a little less painful! Tommy and I are up to 8 miles in a single run now (and yes, that includes hills). We're on our way to Richmond this coming weekend to run in the Ukrop's Monument Ave. 10K. It'll be my first real race, so wish me luck!
