TRAIN ~ ENDURE ~ ACHIEVE ~ MATTER

Me (with great ‘flock of seagulls hair’) recovering w/ cold beer on the beach, post-2004 Virginia Beach Rock-n-Roll 1/2 Marathon (Sept. 2004).

.... had to move the sentimental stuff to the bottom.

.... also had to up my goal. With 7500.00 all but 'in the bag' and people still contacting me wanting to contribute/help, I raised the bar to $10,000.00. We CAN do it.

Training Update

4/29/2005- Ran the CMM 1/2 in 1:47 & change. It was a good run, had a lot of "gas" left in the tank at the finish. The last mile sprint was nice.
4/28/2005- Walked all over Nashville.
4/26/2005- Got 1 hour of cardio in at the gym prior to headin to the BULLS game.
4/25/2005- Evening run of 8 miles on and around Cisco, painful but good.
4/24/2005- Finnally returned to the gym (I really needed to sweat) after 6 days off was rough. Knocked out 1 hour cardio and 1 hour pilates. Root cause of my pain was the FUEL BELT that I wore last week somehow during my NYC run I severely strained several of my AB muscles (not good). Needless to say the FUEL BELT IS HISTORY.
4/21/2005- PAIN!!! To bed & Dr's tomorrow.
4/20/2005- 1 hour of cardio pre-ML QBR. Thankfully the security guys opened the gym @ the Sheraton...
4/19/2005- I finally did it! I made time to run around Central Park on a trip to NYC! Total run was about 7 miles, fuel belt worked well, hoping to run tomorrow afternoon as well.
4/18/2005- Put in 1 hour of cardio and 1 hour of lifting (chest/tris) this morning.
4/17/2005- 5M mile 'shoulda-been-recovery' run at Lake Johnson, mid-70's/clear/sunny/HOT. Drank all the water I brought with me! 1st run with a Fuel Belt (4 bottle) mixed emotions about it, but damn I needed that H2O.
4/16/2005- Put in 13M with the team this morning, started the run @ 7:00 @ approx 39 degrees.. burrrrr, I've been spoiled. Finished 2 hours later drenched in sweat it was high 50's by that point.
4/13/2005- Piltates with Alicia.
4/12/2005- Started the morning with bootcamp (indoors due to rain) and finished with SPIN. Lots of good & much needed sweating!
4/11/2005- Completed a brutal 6M run around Cisco/Ericsson/Eisai then enjoyed a pilates (let's revisit the fundamentals class w/Alicia).
4/10/2005- Opted for some recovery walking 2-3 M today, nice and easy!
4/9/2005- Team 16M run... finished in 2:30:00 with the help of John, Tom, Jeff, and of course Beth!
4/8/2005- Back-2-Back classes- Boot Camp & SPIN in the morning. Good stuff.
4/7/2005- Good 5M loop @ Lake Johnson- beautiful day! 80 degrees, sunny, and breezy. SPOILED! I have 45 minutes on the eliptical and pilates class slated for this evening.
4/6/2005- Excellent bootcamp, this morning lots-o sprinting and upper body work. Hopped in to a SPIN class right after, was a terrific way sweat-out my remaining energy. Looking forward to a revisit of Lake Johnson this evening.
4/5/2005- Good pilates class tonight. Alica made a point to work our legs extra hard when you found out that I had a run planned for right after class. She is oh-so-sweet! 4M recovery run was rough, but I got it done.
4/4/2005- Awesome run this afternoon at Lake Johnson. Was 1/2 pavement path and 1/2 trail run, very nice change. John-- Thanks for the idea & company. Chalkin up another 9.5M.
4/4/2005- Update from the past week: made it to Pilates on Thursday but missed Tuesday, Bootcamp was cancelled on Wednesday but was great on Friday, ran in the Cooper River Bridge Run (10k) on Saturday posted a 45:46 (personal best). I could not have run that time without the J-SCUD (that's right he is a cross between a JDAM and SCUD missle) yellin at me with 300 yds to go!
3/28/2005- Knocked out another easy 4 miles with Ryan and smokey. Logistics for the 'bridgerun' this weekend are firming-up!.
3/26/2006- Well the 1st 10 miles of the planned 13 miles was easy thanks to my running partner... John Klekner. THANKS MAN! Once we hit the 10M pt & then the 11.5M point a few others egged me on and I ended up putting in 16.9 miles. I have taken the liberty to round-up 17 M when boasting to friends! This morning's run was the longest run I have ever completed (finished in about 2:45:00). I am happily resting until Monday evening.
3/25/2005- Smokey successfully dragged Ryan and I around Lake Lynn for the 1st 2 mile lap, then we returned the favor for lap # 2.
3/25/2005- Bootcamp this morning in the mist was excellent, lots of strength training. 4 M planned for tonight around Lake Lyn.
3/24/2005- Made it to the office for Pilates class (w/ ball) Alica was kind :). Then went on a 5.5 M interval/hill run with Shaun.
3/23/2005- Bootcamp is back and so is Sgt Lynch, w/ a vengence! It was pouring outside this morning. An impromptu aerobic circuit was put together-- it smoked the group WELL.
3/22/2005- Well my 2x4 day turned into: a 5 miler in the AM (Tampa), flew to Raleigh, made it to Pilates Class and then ran 4.5 miles. Good tough day. Bootcamp starts back tomorrow AM.
3/21/2005- Took Sunday off, my legs needed a rest. Ran 8.5M this morning, started sunny but ended shady (perfect). Looking forward to 2 short 4 milers tomorrow.
3/19/2005- Completed 10M solo run in Tampa, FL. It was beautiful! Started @ 45 degrees finished at 62 degrees.
3/18/2005- Ran another 6 miles this morning (same route). Was beautiful outside... Lookin forward to my 10 miler in Tampa tomorrow monrning.
3/17/2005- Ran 6 miles in the sorta snowy rain tonight. GOOD run, very glad I braved the traffic. Alica, Thanks for the honk & VM!!
3/15/2005- Snuck in 5.5 miles afterwork & before pilates class today. Wow, 2 weeks off from pilates HURTS :)!
3/15/2005- Yesterday was my 'off day' and today (cross) I will be lifting and enjoying the pain of Pilates… can't wait!
3/13/2005- As I promised in my latest e-mail… “the train is back on track”. Having recovered, per Dr.’s orders, all last week (I did not realize that not-exercising was so difficult) I am back in action. We, TEAM, knocked-out an 8 miler Saturday (was a balmy 33 degrees). Then on Sunday morning I ran 4.5-5 miles with Ryan and Smokey around Lake Lynn. Feeling good!
3/5/2005- Good 6M run with the TEAM today in RTP. Few sprinkles and it got colder as the run progressed :)... Looking forward to some beers tonight.
3/2/2005- Have a bad cold looks like I will be down for some maintenance this week.
2/27/2005- lots of solid exercise this weekend the 4 miler was excellent... finished in 29:00. This AM Shaun & I put in 9 miles in RTP. Needless to say I was "tucked-in" and asleep by 8:30. No Oscars for me!
2/25/2005- After Pilates last night and Boot Camp this morning the body is tired. Looking forward to Coach Bubba's 4Miler tomorrow AM & an nice slow easy 8 Miler on Sunday.
2/24/2005- I did get my afternoon run in yesterday (7 miles) . Thankfully, cause it was rainin and cold this morning. Did 115 minutes cardio (30 elipitcal & 45 SPIN class)
2/23/2005- Cross-trained @ bootcamp this AM. Wow did this workout remind me to eat 'healthy' every day. (nuff said). I might try to sneak in a run this afternoon, we will see if the weather agrees with me.
2/22/2005- Cross-trained. Alica took our pilates class through the paces rather rapidly today... apparently we are getting more advanced. More sore, yes. Not sure about more advanced.
2/21/2005- Enjoyed a couple days off. Needed to rest the bones but definately missed the exercise.
2/19/2005- TNT group run today, 5 miler in RTP. About 20-30 peeps in our running group.
2/18/2005- cross-trained today= bootcamp! Sgt. Lynch, per his usual high standards, worked the remaining ‘recruits’ hard in 30 degree weather.
2/17/2005- ran everyday of my upstate New York vacation (yes, it was damn cold!), put in 7 miles this morning before sunrise, weekly average = 18 miles.

Note to my Friends & Family

WELCOME to my Team In Training home page. I realize that for some of you this may be a shock and for others this may be yet another example of how Clay has gone "just a little bit more insane". Either way you are now aware that I have made some very dramatic changes in my life during the past two years.

In addition to maintaining the changes I refer to above, I have also made a commitment to myself to “give back” and become more involved in my community & society. To that end, and serving a dual purpose of helping me maintain my health, I have joined the Team In Training organization.

My first challenge with TNT & LLS is to ‘make good’ on my Spring 2005 commitment. That task is two fold:
-1- Train for and compete in the 2005 Rock-n-Roll Marathon (June 5th/San Diego, CA).
-2- Raise $7,500.00 to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

In an effort to keep my message crisp… I offer both a comment and challenge:

My comment: I will need both your financial and moral support to be successful in this worthy endeavor. You have NOT failed me in the past & I do not believe you will fail me now nor in the future.

My challenge to you: I personally challenge you to meet or BEAT my personal financial contribution of $50.00 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to read my updates and assess my progress.

Thank you for your support! --Clay

Special Message

Today I received an amazing contribution to my campaign. It was delivered in an envelope, the envelope contained both a check (nice) as well as a greeting card. The message, a poem, on the front of the card is what I would like to share with you.... Steve and Harriet... thank you.

Climb Till Your Dream Comes True
By Helen Steiner Rice

Often your tasks will be many,
and more than you think you can do.

Often the road will be rugged,
and the hills insurmountable, too…

But always remember, the hills ahead
are never as steep as they seem,

And with faith in your heart, start upward
and climb till you reach your dream.

Special Thanks

Marcus and Brian, how long has it been since I have seen or talked with either one of you? How long since we affectively traded phone calls/e-mails? The answer to both of those questions is “WAY TOO LONG”.

Your almost startling generosity is a gift nearly beyond understanding. I pledge to both of you that we will see each other soon. And let me say it now… The beer is on me.
