Z's Team In Training Page
Riding for a reason
I want to share a quick story with you. I met a young man by the name of Sam Boylston, from Sanford, FL when he was 8 years old, in 2002. At the time I was the cycling coach for the Leukemia Society Team in Training program and Sam was our honorary coach and undergoing chemotherapy. Besides the obvious fact that it broke my heart to see this little man undergoing such brutal treatments it made me feel like I was contributing to his better future by coaching voluntary fund raisers for their cycling journey of 100 miles. My job was to coach these fund raisers and their job was to raise funds for the cure to Leukemia and the honorary coach’s job was to inspire all of us!
In cancer treatment when a patient finishes chemotherapy he is considered in remission. If the cancer stays gone for 5 years he is considered cured. I am EXTREMELY happy to report that as of 30 days ago (May 1, 2007) Sam is cured of Leukemia! He has been Leukemia free for 5 years.
I feel very proud that I was involved by coaching amazing people who raised funds. In celebration of Sam I’ve decided to participate as a fund raiser. Not only that but our coach is one of the best cyclists I ever coached during the program! I respectfully ask for a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As a coach I had no problem getting athletes to the finish line. As a fund raiser, I have no idea what to do – except ask people I know, to help with this cause.
Here are some facts you may not be aware of:
• $1000 – would help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fund a researcher to find a cure.
• $500 – Would provide patient aid to a person with cancer for one year
• $100 – Would provide a patient with transportation for traveling from home to a cancer center
• $75 – Would provide bone marrow typing for a family member of a patient with Leukemia
• $50 – Would register a person to be a bone marrow donor
• $25 – Would pay the cost of a patient’s chemotherapy drug prescription co-payment
• $18 – ANY donation will help continue the needed research to find a cure.
I will be riding 100 miles on September 30, 2007 and am committed to raise $5,800. I invite you to make your tax deductible donation by September 23 in any amount that makes sense for you.
As a special thank you, for those contributing $50 or more, your name will be entered into a drawing for a race entry with Buttar.com events.
Thank you very much for your generous support.
