Timmy's Tour de Shore for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research |
|
Childhood brain cancer is very personal. It is a tragedy that can strike a family at any time.
Once again this year we continue our efforts to draw attention and raise money to support research of childhood brain tumors. Far too many children continue to suffer and lose their lives to this illness. Through research we can learn more and hopefully someday prevent this disease and find a cure.
On November 27, 2004, our eight year old son Timmy was diagnosed with a brain tumor. For 17 months we battled this beast called cancer! Timmy bravely underwent many long unsedated MRI’s, hospital stays, blood transfusions, and more. Despite three different chemotherapies and 30 radiation treatments, the cancer would continue to progress.
Timmy's Neuro-Oncology team was considered among the best in the country. But as we learned, the brightest minds, using the best facilities, just cannot cure all pediatric brain tumors. Timmy, like so many other brave children, could not be cured, could not be saved. Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer and the second overall leading cause of death of children under 15 in the US.
Timmy’s Tour de Shore is a way to raise awareness about pediatric brain tumors. It is a way for our community to come together to raise funds for a research grant to further the understanding and treatments of pediatric brain tumors
In 2007, Timmy’s Tour de Shore for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research, with the help of 450 enthusiastic bike riders, and hundreds of fund raisers, raised $70,000. On December 21st, 2007, the money was awarded to Dr. Peter Phillips, Director of the Department of Neuro-Oncology Research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a national leader in the development of new therapies for childhood brain tumors.
Join us on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at Sandy Hook inside Gateway National Park, New Jersey. We will have a 2 mile bike ride around historic Fort Hancock, and an 8 mile ride inside Sandy Hook. There will also be a 23 mile bike ride along the beautiful beaches of Sandy Hook to Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch and back. This ride will be escorted by members of the New Jersey State Police.
There will be breakfast before the ride. Following the ride there will be activities for kids, music, food and drinks.
Here is how you can help: register on Active.com to participate in the 2008 Timmy’s Tour de Shore. Once you are registered you can then create a personal fund raising web page. You can then ask for donations from family, friends, coworkers and neighbors - your fund raising page will make it easy for you to make a difference. There are no fund raising requirements to ride in Timmy’s Tour de Shore, but we encourage all participants to set a fund raising goal to raise funds to support pediatric brain tumor research.
