Just a few years ago, we thought that cancer was an adult disease. We never knew a child with cancer. But then on November 27, 2004, our eight year old son Timmy was diagnosed with a brain tumor. For 17 months we battled this beast called cancer! Despite three different chemotherapies and 30 radiation treatments, the cancer would continue to progress.
Timmy's Neuro-Oncology team was considered among the best in the country. But as we learned, the brightest minds, using the best facilities, just can't cure all pediatric brain tumors. Timmy, like so many other brave children, could not be cured, could not be saved.
Our mission is clear. More needs to be done to advance pediatric brain tumor research so that new treatments can be developed to help save our children. And you can help!
Timmy’s Tour de Shore is a way to raise awareness about pediatric brain tumors. It is a way for our community to come together to raise funds for a research grant to further the understanding and treatments of pediatric brain tumors. The 2007 Timmy’s Tour de Shore Research grant will be awarded to the Neuro-Oncology Research Department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is a national leader in the development of new therapies for childhood brain tumors.
Join us on Sunday, October 7, 2007, at Sandy Hook inside Gateway National Park, New Jersey. We will have a guided bike ride around historic Fort Hancock. There will also be a twenty three mile bike ride along the beautiful beaches of Sandy Hook to Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch and back. This ride will be escorted by members of the New Jersey State Police.
There will be breakfast before the ride. Following the ride there will be activities for kids, music, drinks and snacks.
Here is how you can help: register on active.com to participate in the 2007 Timmy Tour de Shore. Once you are registered you can then create a personal fundraising web page. Then you ask for donations from family, friends, coworkers and neighbors - your fundraising page will make it easy for you to make a difference. There is no fundraising requirement to ride in Timmy’s Tour de Shore but we encourage all participants to set a fundraising goal to raise funds to support pediatric brain tumor research.
