| My 100 Mile Ride to Save Lives |
|
On September 12, I will embark on my first 100 mile bike ride to bring hope to thousands of patients affected by two debilitating kidney diseases, Nephrotic Syndrome and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
What is FSGS? I first learned about this disease through my friend Michael Levine. His six year old son, Matthew, was diagnosed with FSGS when he was only three years old. For a period of time, Matthew woke up with swollen eyes which doctors believed to be allergies. A urine analysis later on revealed high protein levels. Instead of retaining protein, the ‘good stuff,’ Matthew’s kidneys were not filtering the body’s waste properly.
Matthew was immediately taken out of school and his parents received the shocking message that their sons may have kidney failure. FSGS is the second leading cause of kidney failure in children and targets adults as well.
To date, there is no effective treatment or cure and there are no FDA approved drugs to treat FSGS. When treatment with steroids and other drugs fails, patients face harsh dialysis regiments or require a transplant. In many cases, the disease reoccurs after a transplant. As of April 20, 2009, 4,031 FSGS patients were waiting for a kidney transplant. Of these 4,031 individuals, 731 had already received at least one transplant which had failed.
Together, we will save kidneys and to save lives.
Your tax-deductible donations will support the mission of The NephCure Foundation (EIN 38-3569922, www.NephCure.org). NephCure is currently the only organization exclusively committed to support research seeking the cause and cure for FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome. There are actually more people with these than Cystic Fibrosis which is why we need greater awareness.
NephCure provides educational programs and raises money to fund research which will lead to effective treatments for Matthew and thousands of others who share his story.
Please donate and forward the link of my page to your friends. |
