People do things for different reasons; I do it simply because I can.
About a year and a half ago my family got the biggest blow, my aunt Andrea was diagnosed with brain cancer. One minute my aunt and I are laughing and talking away, the next minute I am visiting her in the hospital.
Exactly a year ago my best friend April was diagnosed with kidney cancer. I still remember the day she called me. She said sit down I have something to tell you, I have cancer but I am going to be OK. I just cried and cried.
A few weeks later my friend Susie called me, she also said bucket sit down I have something to tell you…I have cancer but cancer does not have me!
At the beginning of this year I received an email from my good friend Ginger Nelson. Ginger the one person who has supported me with every crazy idea I have ever had...cancer.
Fast forward to today, my Aunt still has the cancer but is living life to the fullest. She always laughs and says you know I am forgetful because I have this thing in my head but I still love you. My friend April had her kidney removed and is regularly monitored. But the best thing of all, she is having a baby. She didn’t let cancer bring her down, she fought it and she is having a baby!! Oh did I say that already =) My friend Susie, she is amazing. While she fought her cancer she also decided to run marathons with me and raise funds to find a cure. Here she is fighting and she is willing to help someone else. She is utterly and completely amazing. Ginger continues to fight and continues to be one of my biggest supporters. She truly is amazing!
My biggest inspiration has been my very dear friend Audrey Duffy. She always wears this shirt to practice that says “If you think running a marathon is hard try chemotherapy.” Last year we ran the San Diego Marathon together. We ran 26.2 miles in a little over 7 hours. During that time I got to learn so much about Audrey and why she raises funds to find a cure. Simply put, she wants to live. Each time I am ready to quit I go back to our conservations and remember that if she can do it I can do it.
This is Audrey
My friends are the lucky ones. But what about those who been told I'm sorry we have done all we can for you? That is where the Lazarex Cancer Foundation helps. They provide financial assistance to defray the costs associated with patient participation in FDA clinical trials. Additionally, they help patients navigate their clinical trial options and provide community education and outreach services. Their mission is to provide resources for cancer patients who’ve been told they have no other options, but who are not yet done with their journey in life and refuse to give up now. So now I ask you my friends, do you have a $1 or $2 or maybe even $5 to help find a cure? Let’s knock out cancer together. Thank you for your support.
