Team Payton
A miracle is defined as “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of God.” Some people can go their entire lives without experiencing a miracle, however others, experience them every day.

Miracles are a common occurrence for parents of special needs children. They can be big, and they can be small. Miracles come in all shapes and sizes, however are none the less, miracles.

This past year was filled with miracles for our family. One of the largest miracles we experienced was that after originally being diagnosed with aggressive throat cancer in April of 2013, my Mom was actually declared “cancer-free” only 4 days later. Payton has also experienced many miracles. The surgery she had last January which resulted in two broken legs in the attempt to give her a better chance at walking went extremely well. I think that most of us could admit that if we had two broken legs, we would be miserable. But no, not our Payton, she was a superstar. She rarely complained of pain and could not wait to get up and play with Jillian again. If that is not a miracle, then I do not know what is. Payton also learned how to sit on the side of the bed by herself, write her name, sit on a “big girl” potty, color, and walk in a reverse walker. Although these miracles are smaller in nature, to us, they are still miracles.

Life is full of miracles, however sometimes we are just too busy to notice. Payton has taught us to slow down, take a step back, and celebrate these miracles, both the big and the small, every day.

UCP has played an integral part in all of these miracles. They have celebrated with us when Payton accomplishes a new task or overcomes a very large obstacle and are the heroes behind her progress. They work hard to help Payton be all she can be and for that, we are forever grateful.

Please consider joining Team Payton on Sunday, July 27th and experience firsthand the miracle that is the Cleveland Triathlon. See parents, friends, family and even UCP clients push themselves to the limit in order spread awareness for children and adults with disabilities. Even if you are unable to race, you can still support Team Payton and Team UCP by either volunteering, making a small donation or just coming down to cheer us on. All proceeds raised will go to UCP so that they can continue making miracles!
