Using The Power Of Running To Make a Difference For Girls
With my son and daughters after the Canyonlands Half Marathon and 5-miler this year. My oldest daughter, a GOTR program participant, loved running her 5K so much the first time around that it led to us doing the 5-miler together at Canyonlands.
Greetings from Western Colorado! I am back again for a third year as a SoleMates (formerly Team Tiara) member, working to support Girls on the Run of Western Colorado at a time when it is needed now more than ever. Due to tough economic times, an all-time high of 30% of our local Girls on the Run participants requested and received scholarships to participate in the life-changing 10-week program and season-ending 5K race. Thanks to great grassroots support from family, friends and local businesses, ALL of these girls were able to receive scholarships to participate at a time when they otherwise would have been unable. Registration fees for all girls are also kept at a low $35 when it actually costs upwards of $100 per girl to participate, which makes it easier for all the families of local girls. There are no "small" donations, and support at any level means that one more girl will be able to go through the program, and leave with a stronger sense of identity, a greater acceptance of themselves, a healthier body image, and an understanding of what it means to be a part of a team, and a community. I once again come to the program with goals and races on my own personal running journey that started with a 5K and continued to my first half marathon, my first marathon, and my Boston Marathon qualifying race a few months ago. The road continues this year with my first "double." My SoleMates races will be The Other Half Marathon in Moab, Utah in October, where I hope to run my first sub-1:40 half. I will follow that with the inaugural Rim Rock Marathon, right here in my own back yard. Both events will be challenging but I also want to set the bar high and work hard for the girls as I ask my family and friends in turn for support. Please consider a 100% tax deductible donation to support Girls on the Run, and regardless of financial support, I'd appreciate positive vibes for my fall races to run strong on behalf of GOTR. Thanks for your support.
