My name is Susan Strong; I'm thirty-six and live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband Eric and my two kids Jack and Mia.
In June of 2006, Eric was diagnosed with a grade II astrocytoma in his left temporal lobe, which required surgery. The tumor was removed in October 2006, and his recovery went very well. His follow-up treatment included MRI's every 3 months, and in January of this year it was discovered that the tumor had grown again and the best course of action was surgery.
He had his second surgery in March, and pathology determined that this second tumor was a grade III. Because this tumor was more aggressive, we were more aggressive – and Eric went though an intensive six-week radiation and chemotherapy program which seems to have been successful. He has now entered his twelve-cycle chemotherapy program, and we are very optimistic that the tumor is being handily defeated!
I am running in Eric's honor, as well as in honor of all of our friends who have been touched by brain tumors. It has been amazing; since Eric has become bald, and as we talk more about brain tumors, the more we realize that so many lives have been affected by them. Our family has been blessed to have wonderful medical care, family support, and amazing friends. By running the New York City Marathon as part of Team McGraw, my goal is to raise awareness as well as money for a disease that has personally changed my life and the life of my family.
Thank you for supporting such a special organization, and for supporting me on this journey.
