I am proud to be running the New York City Marathon for the first time as a member of Team McGraw and supporting them in a cause that is very important to me and my family.
In September 2003, the lives of my family would be changed forever when my mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was a glioblastoma and – even for the strongest woman we had ever known – it would be tough to beat.
Over the next two years, we learned more about this disease than anyone should have to. We got the best doctors, tried every possible treatment, and watched our mom fight this disease harder than we even imagined she could.
My mom lost her battle at the young age of 56. She was a grandmother of 8.
Along the way, we met so many brave people who were fighting this disease with the support of friends and family, and we met some very special people who continue to support others even after they have lost a loved one themselves.
It was for Raising Hope, a 5-mile race that would show support and raise awareness of brain tumors, that I began running again at thirty-four years old. That race was in honor of my mother, and for two years she was able to be there at the start of the race – and it was her face that I looked for at the finish line.
It is that feeling – and the memory of my mother – that will make this race in New York City so special.
