My name is Karen Heiden. I am a mother, hand surgeon, and an avid runner. I live with my husband, Eric, and children, Zoe and Connor, in Park City, Utah. I have run marathons in the past, but never for such an important cause. I am honored to run the New York Marathon for Team McGraw in support of brain cancer patients and valuable research efforts.
Through medicine and my own life experience, I have learned that cancer can occur in anyone at anytime. Brain tumors can be particularly devastating, even if not malignant, just due to their location. I am running in honor of two individuals, Kenne Zugman and Alexis Saunders.
Kenne Zugman was a family friend who was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), in 2005. He relocated from his home in Mexico back to the United States for medical treatment. Despite two attempts at surgical resection, he passed away 16 months later at the age of 63. He fought with courage, grace, and determination. He is greatly missed by all.
Alexis Saunders is presently fighting her cancer battle. In 2005, while in the midst of obtaining her Master’s in social work, she was also diagnosed with GBM. At the age of 29, she underwent surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation. She had the tenacity to achieve her goal of finishing her master’s degree in 2006 and then worked as a hospice social worker in her hometown of Tampa, Florida. Seven months later, her tumor recurred, and she has since undergone two further surgeries – the most recent in March 2008. She now works at home as a consultant and is soon to be volunteering at a local hospice. Alexis gains support from her family, her doctors, friends, social work, strong spiritual beliefs, and poetry. She is beautiful, courageous, and an inspiration.
The enthusiasm of Team McGraw is contagious, and I am excited to toe the line in New York. Running a marathon is no comparison to battling cancer, but every step of the way will be in honor and support of Kenne and Alexis.
Thanks to everyone for all your support; cherish every day! |
