20 years ago my mother lost her life to the same disease that afflicted Tug McGraw. In November, I’ll be returning to NYC to run in the big marathon to increase the awareness of the disease and to keep the memory of my mother alive and strong.
For those who did not have the pleasure of meeting my mom, she embodied Tug’s “Ya Gotta Believe” attitude. From her humble beginnings as a farm girl to life as a struggling immigrant, she never lost sight of her dreams of creating a better life for her family. She believed in a better world for all.
The NYC marathon carries tremendous emotional value as the course passes within a few blocks from the hospital where my mom spent her final days. I was not a runner prior to signing up for the marathon, but with focus, determination, and with mom’s inspiration, I will finish the race.
Growing up in Queens, Tug McGraw was one of my favorite childhood Met pitchers, so I am proud to be running the NYC Marathon as a member of Team McGraw for the Tug McGraw Foundation.
Thank you for supporting me and the foundation.
